One memory that is at the forefront of my mind when creating every cake is my own wedding, and not for the reasons you might think!
I grew up on beautiful Royal Deeside so when choosing our wedding venue it had to be a local luxury hotel (that is no longer in existence!).
The hotel failed to explain how ill our wedding co-ordinator actually was and over 31 years later I still get angry when thinking about the catalogue of avoidable errors. Here are only a few ‘highlights’…
😤 We had a meeting with the head chef 3 days before the wedding to finalise the menu, with no tasting.
😤 We eventually received the table plan the day before the wedding.
😤 Despite constant reassurances, our wedding co-ordinator was not there on our wedding day.
😤 The top table seating plan was the wrong way round. I sat beside the Best Man and Mr H sat beside one of the Bridesmaids.
😤 We had to constantly prompt the random staff.
😤 We had planned a ceilidh for 140 guests on a dance floor over 1/3 of the size of the function suite.
😤 Our planned Grand March, a Highland tradition to start the ceilidh, had to be changed at the last minute to a ‘first dance’ on a 6m x 6m dance floor.
😤 Without approval the venue played the live music from the main suite into the smaller suite below. Our ceilidh was over 2 floors!!!
😤 As there was no staff in the smaller suite I asked guests to help me take our cake into the kitchen, away from the edge of the dance floor where it had been left.
😤 We were directed to the wrong room to change ahead of our departure. The tears finally came as we sat on the stairs waiting to be told the correct room.
😤 The white dress was clearly not enough of a giveaway! I managed to have 2 glasses of champagne over the whole day - both I had to ask for!
Sadly I am only too aware that there are no second chances!
