A Brief History of the Bundt Cake
A Bundt cake (pronounced bunt with a silent‘d’) is baked in a Bundt pan; shaping it into a distinctive ring shape. The shape is inspired by a traditional European cake known as Gugelhupf, Gugelhupf, a brioche like cake, was particularly popular among Jewish communities in parts of Germany, Austria and Poland. In the north of Germany Gugelhupf is traditionally know

n as Bundkuchen. Uses of the word "bund" to describe cakes outside of Europe can be found in Jewish American cookbooks from around the start of the 20th century. The alternative spelling "bundte" also appears in a recipe as early as 1901. In 1950, the cake had become so popular that H. David Dalquist trademarked the name, “bundt pan”. Dalquist, who was the founder of Nordic Ware, made the bundt pans in response to requests made by members of the Hadassah Society in Minneapolis, Minnesota. A Jewish group of women wanted to make cakes they remembered growing up with in Europe. It gained a boost in popularity in 1966, when a Bundt cake called the "Tunnel of Fudge", baked by Ella Helfrich, took second place at the annual Pillsbury Bake –Off.
