The OLD Bakehouse THE BAKERY We have to keep our ovens lit every day of the year, they have not gone out for more than a century. We now do hot paninis ,toasties.

The bakery was established in 1890 .It maybe the oldest working bakery in the country.We still use the original coal fired ovens but these days we have to use coke instead. We keep to the original method of baking , as our award winning baker trained at Howards bakery at cromford , he also worked at the Bakewell pudding shop in Bakewell for 12 years , hence the great bread and the fantastic Bakewe

ll puddings. We make a variety of bread which is baked fresh daily, white , wholemeal
granary , royal stewart. On a Friday and Saturday we make a range of specialist breads , rye , soda, multiseed, 50% 50% white wholemeal (these are very popular) and new to our range we have added artisan sour dough, corn and spelt, gluten and wheat free white. We also do a range of shapes and sizes, oven bottoms, bloomers, farmhouse , quarntons , large and small tin loaves. We do a large range of savouries , sausage rolls , bakehouse pasties . etc.... our cheese bread , cheese straws soon fly of our shelves (very popular with locals and tourists). Our cakes are all made on the premises which we do stock a large varity of them .The brownies , carrot, toffee, choc slices go down well with the school children aswell as our pies , sandwiches , pasties etc, better now that we have had the new pie warmer, they have no need to wait ....
We also do take out tea , coffee, pop , crisps. Our home made quiche is a favorite and our pizzas too....we class mostly everything home made as we live here on the job.. This time of year again, everytime I go into Wirksworth I get stopped and asked for HOT X BUNS, so far last week I must have had dozens of people asking me for them .
If anyone out there finds any that come nearly close to ours can you let me know.

I would like to say a big thankyou to Mr Michael Spencer for all the hard work he as put in over the years ,repairing boilers ,fires doing all the gas work at The Old Bakehouse and at 21 Steeple Grange.
If anyone out there needs any of this kind of work doing ,he is the man.

We have had quite a lot of phone calls here at the Old Bakehouse, guess what for ...... Hundreds of HOT X BUNS its that time of year ,people who have not been here since last year still think we are baking....
And I am , Ralph has given me his recipie for his white bread so I have made my own bloomers and oven bottoms . think I might have a new calling ,bake killers bread then sell it on Farmers Markets for at least £3.00 a loaf ,shame he wont tell me the HOT X BUN RECIPIE.

The Old Bakehouse as had a complete renovation with the help and hard work of Sean Nelson of ASA plumbing. We highly recommend him as he has done a fantastic job of renovating our 2 properties.
We are now up for sale with Grants estate agents of Wirksworth

I have been asked if we can fire the ovens bake up for HOT X BUNS. Trouble is they will never run again and Ralph will not bake.

Strange , we have been closed for 6 months now and we still have people coming to us or phoning us to ask if they can place an order. Today I have had people asking when we will re open ,as they can not find bread as good as ours anywhere.
People don't know whats good until it as gone and then they miss it.
