As a small business, who has been operating successfully for the past 13 years, I’ve come across some amazing customers who value your product, appreciate your hard work, and generally it’s an absolute pleasure to deal with them on a regular basis.
Unfortunately though, not everyone is as polite as the customers I have been lucky enough to meet so far….
After a long, hot day in the bakery yesterday, followed by several hours of working on my tax return last night, I wake up to rudeness from a man who messaged me at 04:58 asking where in London my store was located?
At that time in the morning, I was asleep in bed, pinned down by two feral spaniels, probably dreaming of beach holidays and early retirement.
When I didn’t respond to him at stupid o’clock, he proceeded to just send question marks…..something that as a small business, makes my blood boil. I am not a business that is open 24hours, I respond to messages throughout my working day whenever I’m not covered in brownie batter, or operating a 10L mixer.
I politely responded that it was rude to send question marks after I hadn’t responded to his earlier message, and pointed out that perhaps if he needed chocolate brownies at that time in the morning, he should maybe visit a 24 hour supermarket?
He then proceeded to tell me that I was the rude, impatient one and that I could say ‘bye’ to my business as he was going to go on social media ( presumably to trash the London store that I apparently own)
I will say that if, as a customer, you treat me with kindness and respect, you will get it back in abundance. If however, you are rude, impatient, or heaven forbid you mansplain about how I should run my business, you are not welcome to purchase from my business, and if you’re really unlucky, I’ll set my feral spaniels on you 🐾🐾
