"No Family Should Wonder Who Is Next": Valleys Woman Faces Agonising Wait As Rare Alzheimer's Devastates Family 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

When most people hear the word Alzheimer's, they picture an illness that exclusively affects the elderly.

However, one young woman is determined to shatter this misconception as her family confronts a heartbreaking and rarely discussed reality.

Twenty-three-year-old Charlotte Vaughan is bravely sharing her family's story after her mother, Joanne Harrigan, aged forty-five, was diagnosed with a rare genetic form of early-onset Alzheimer's.

The condition, known as familial Alzheimer's disease, accounts for less than one percent of all cases in the UK. While nearly a million people nationwide are living with dementia, only an estimated few thousand individuals carry these specific familial genes.

The gene has been passed down through generations of Charlotte's family, affecting her nan and her nan's sister.

Now, Charlotte faces the agonising wait for her own genetic test results to discover if she too has inherited the devastating condition.

Living with such profound uncertainty is a silent struggle, but it has only served to fuel Charlotte's resolve.

She draws immense inspiration from her mother, Joanne, who has dedicated herself to the cause for the past seventeen years, actively participating in research studies and tirelessly raising money to help find a cure.

Currently, there are no treatments available to prevent or stop the progression of the illness for Joanne.

Despite this, the family continues to channel their energy into advocacy. A memory walk is now being organised in heartfelt honour of Joanne, Charlotte's nan, and her nan's sister, aiming to keep their stories at the forefront of the fight against the disease.

Charlotte firmly believes that raising awareness is the first crucial step toward driving the research and funding needed for better treatments. She emphasises that her mother is so much more than a medical label; Joanne is a devoted mother, daughter, and grandmother who deserves the best possible future.

Through her advocacy, Charlotte hopes to challenge outdated beliefs about the disease, offer solidarity to other families navigating similar inherited conditions, and inspire vital change for future generations.
