Join the LSESU Grimshaw Club for a Coffee Morning, featuring a case study discussion, with Rachel Chhoa-Howard!

When international courts take up cases in the Global South, the focus is usually on the verdict. Less attention goes to whether the justice delivered is sufficient, or the justice victims and their communities actually want. This coffee morning welcomes Rachel Chhoa-Howard, a researcher who has worked at Amnesty International for ten years and covers Southeast Asia, with a focus on the Philippines. Centred on the International Criminal Court’s case against former President Rodrigo Duterte, the conversation asks who justice is for and by whom it is created. Why do some leaders reach the courtroom while others do not? How does a court in The Hague land with victims’ families, with people who support the former president, and with communities that hold their own sense of what justice requires? And what does justice mean when one person faces trial while many others remain free at home? Students will gain a practical view of international justice that goes beyond the headlines and into its harder, more contested questions.

This event was organised by Speaker Officer Sofia Arboleda-Calderon and Vice-President Belle Venize.

Join the LSESU Grimshaw Club for a coffee morning with Mohammed Soliman!

Could closer ties between the Middle East and South Asia form the basis of a new regional order? Join the LSESU Grimshaw Club for a coffee morning with Mohammed Soliman, Senior Fellow at the Middle East Institute, author of West Asia: A New American Grand Strategy in the Middle East, and adviser to multinational companies.

We will examine his vision of “West Asia”, asking whether trade, technology and investment are producing shared strategic interests. The discussion will consider India–UAE–Israel cooperation alongside Saudi–Turkish–Pakistani defence ties, Iran’s place in this order, and the relationship between Palestinian statehood and Israel’s regional integration. We will also explore how far regional states can pursue their priorities amid US–China competition, and what Britain and Europe can contribute.

The moderated conversation will be followed by student questions. And coffee and tea is on us!

This event is free for Grimshaw members, but require a *free ticket* which can be purchased through this link: https://lsesu.native.fm/event/grimshaw-club-coffee-morning-with-mohammed-soliman/292836, or can be found through the link in our bio.

Join the LSESU Grimshaw Club for a panel exploring what it would take to end the US–Iran crisis and secure a lasting agreement.

The panel features Gabrielle Rifkind and Oliver McTernan, mediators who bring opposing political and religious leaders into dialogue, and Lord Ahmad of Wimbledon, a former UK minister for the Middle East and United Nations. They are joined by Ellie Geranmayeh, whose work spans Iranian politics and nuclear diplomacy, and Dr Sidharth Kaushal, RUSI’s specialist in naval strategy and maritime security.

Drawing on their experience, the discussion will examine how mediators can create openings for negotiation, whether military and economic pressure encourages compromise, and what concessions Washington and Tehran might accept. It will also consider what could restore reliable passage through the Strait of Hormuz and secure regional support for an agreement.

This event is a give-it-a-go session that does not require membership. No registration is needed, and there will be 70 seats at the venue allocated on a first-come, first-served basis on the day.

This event was organised by Speaker Officers Ilona Prysyazhnyuk and Isabel Koh, Grimshaw VP Belle Venize and Grimshaw President Jinyi Li.
