I love being outdoors and I have spent much of my life either immersed in farm-life or busying myself in the garden. Before putting down roots in the world of horticulture I spent my days as an agricultural research scientist. Science continues to be an integral influence on my work, and shapes my approach to creating ornamental and edible gardens and green spaces. I absolutely believe that with e
nough encouragement and just the right dose of TLC, even the most ostensibly unbecoming of spaces has the potential to flourish into a beloved refuge. I specialise in transforming small urban gardens, terraces, balconies, courtyards, patios, vegetable patches and allotments into havens which yield food, joy and greenery. My approach to unlocking the potential of a space is founded on the practise of today’s leading horticulturalists, plantspeople and designers. I do this by understanding a site’s fundamental characteristics, identifying its naturally occurring counterpart and its plant communities, and then assembling a planting scheme based on this – thus transporting the essence of the wild to your door. So your sun-baked roof terrace could be a home away from home for plants native to Mediterranean climates, your exposed balcony could provide a suitable spot for coastal flora to inhabit, and woodland species could be quite content in a cool and shady courtyard.
