The truth about fondant: Part 2

Both fondant and buttercream can give a clean, crisp, sharp look to a cake. But this depends on the skill and preference of the baker

For me, personally, I think my fondant cakes look cleaner and smoother and I prefer doing them over buttercream cakes. Fondant cakes are a lot more stable and easier to handle in terms of transportation and storage.

But buttercream cakes have their place too! And rightly so! I do both types of cakes, but as you can see my fondant skills are better and I find I'm able to do a lot more with fondant than buttercream.

So if you want a particular aesthetic for your cake but it can't be done with buttercream, don't be put off! Go for the design you want.

And remember, the thin layer of fondant takes seconds to remove, and much like a herb sprig on a fancy plate of dinner, it doesn't have to be eaten ❤️

The truth about fondant: Part 1

Fondant receives a lot of hate. And I get it. It's not the nicest thing to eat.

It's sickly sweet and it's chewy texture against soft, melt in the mouth cake is unpleasant.

But hear me out...

Custom made fondant cakes aren't like the supermarket fondant cakes.

People hear fondant cake and immediately think of the THICK layer of fondant they find on supermarket cakes and get instantly put off.

But custom cake decorators don't cover cakes in the same way. We understand that the majority of people dislike fondant and we cater for that.

The thin layer of fondant takes seconds to remove, and much like a herb sprig on a fancy plate of dinner, it doesn't have to be eaten ❤️

You're not wasting the fondant. It's like garnish, or a banana peel. It makes things look pretty and protects the cake inside ✌🏽

Them: being a pharmacist is more professional
Me:

Before I was a baker, I was a pharmacist.

And once upon a time, someone said to me "being a pharmacist is cooler, being a baker is less impressive"

And even now I find myself having to tell people that I'm a pharmacist too, just so they take me seriously 😫 - (although this is probably more because I look 12, rather than because I'm a baker 😂)

So here's a little humour to depict the ridiculousness of thinking bakers aren't professionals too.

Also I don't actually own any blazers, shirts or ties, so all clothing courtesy of AI 😅

🌟🎄🎁 Christmas Fruit Cake Orders 🎁🎄🌟

⚠️ PLEASE READ ⚠️

I know, I know! It's far too early for Christmas.

But Christmas Fruit Cakes are made in advance to allow all the Christmassy goodness and flavours to soak in and the cake to mature.

So for those of you who love Christmas Fruit cake, please get thinking! 🙏🏽

All my cakes are made to order (I don't make spares or keep any stock for last minute or emergency orders), therefore it is important that you get your orders in by September 1st.

This allows me enough time to shop, bake and make any fondant decorations for your cake.

Collection dates for your Christmas Fruit cakes will be:
• Monday 21st December
• Tuesday 22nd December
• Wednesday 23rd December

The pictured cakes are examples to show what each size cake looks like. Please refer to the images to see the serving size for each cake.

NB the listed serving sizes are based on generous portions. All serving sizes are approximate.

Your orders can be fully customisable with any design and decorations your festive heart may desire ❤️🎄🎁🎅🏻
(of course I had to make a dinky pastel Christmas cupcake one!)

For more information or to place an order, please contact me via DM

Thank you
(Deep down we all know, it's never too early for Christmas! 😂)

August marks AT awareness month

AT stands for Ataxia Telangiectasia. It's a rare genetic condition that affects the entire body and shortens the life expectancy of the affected individual

One thing I've noticed is that many and most of my fellow AT friends have an extremely similar sense of humour. We can definitely take a joke and we often appreciate it when our friends and people around us don't act like they're walking on eggshells

Not saying that this gives strangers permission to randomly roast or insult us though 😂
We still deserve and appreciate respect ❤️

For AT awareness month, I would like to share this message in response to my disability pride post a few days ago

It definitely made me laugh 😂

Jilly Shah: lol that's how important my birthday is
😂

Jokes aside, having a life limiting condition means that growing old is truly phenomenal ❤️

So many fellow AT individuals have been taken far too soon, with many not living past their 20s or 30s

So not only do I feel lucky, I am grateful for being able to turn 38 and still live my life as well as I possibly can 🥰

(Yes yes I know my birthday was yesterday 😂 I'm a day late posting my cake!) Thank you to everyone for their kind wishes and birthday messages 🩷

Birthday Baking with AI... but make it pink 🩷

The cakes are real!!! 😂 I promise 😅

Unfortunately, the kitchen is not! We have a dated, very wooden kitchen at home (and not the cutesy farmhouse kind either...🙃).

So I used AI to make me a pink kitchen background that I would love to have in real life!

Also spy a Karen Davies Sugarcraft design 👀

With only a couple of days left of July, disability pride month is almost over.

The disability pride posts I've seen on Instagram this month have been great, with many posts pointing out that the word "disabled" is not a dirty or bad word.

I thought I'd do something a little different to the other disability pride posts by sharing a few of the most unhinged and wild things that people have said to me 🫪

These comments were made by random dudes during nights out when I was at university way back in 2006.

Honestly, drunk millennials in the club in the early 2000s had NO FILTER. Or shame 😂

20 years on, such comments would be deemed socially horrific and probably unheard of. And I think that shows progress and a step in the right direction for disability pride and awareness. But we still have a long way to go ❤️
