So today is the day. Saturday 1st December is probably the very last time you'll ever get to see Kurt Vonnegut's Happy Birthday Wanda June.

We have two performances today, one at 3.00pm (tickets only £9 if you call the Old Red's box office) and one at 7.30pm..

The Old Red Lion theatre’s upcoming play ‘Happy Birthday Wanda June’ has become the venue’s fasting selling performance pre-opening night.

The fringe theatre on St John’s Street Angel will be showing the play from Tuesday 30 October to Saturday 24 November. The production by the late author Kurt Vonnegut is set in 1960s America and is described by the theatre as ‘a time-warped version of Odysseus’s return’. Kurt Vonnegut was an American science fiction novelist who’s best known works include Cat’s cradle and slaughterhouse-Five.

Directed by Ant Jones, the play is the story of a war hero returning home after years of being presumed dead. He finds his wife with another man and his country weak, with heroes replaced by “intolerable pacifists”.

The Old Red Lion’s manager, Gareth Jones, said: “Our most popular show until this was The Revenger’s Tragedy which was nearly three years ago now. Happy Birthday Wanda June tickets have just been through the roof. I think this is because it’s Vonnegut’s only play and for such a great writer not to produce more, it fascinates people.”
