A colleague brought me some powdered sakura leaves and pickled sakura, so here they are...Japanese Cherry Blossom cupcakes. The pickled blossom taste of pickled/salted plum and go beautifully with the sweetness of the icing. As for the cake which has the sakura leaves powder in it, it's subtle... a little bit like matcha (Japanese green tea) but a much gentler flavour.

Chris's birthday was perfect excuse to indulge in creative time once again doing something I love. The design came from a photo Chris had taken of an antique tile at an old mansion in Penang. The tile being of Peranakan origin inspired the flavours in the cake - orange cake, layered with red bean and covered with Chinese five-spice icing. Looking forward to my next project already! :-)
