Lofftwen Forest Farm

Lofftwen Forest Farm Turning a hill farm in the Welsh Cambrian mountains into a diverse mix of wild and semi-wild habitats where farming and wildlife work together. www.lofftwen.com

Lofftwen Forest Farm is a family-run project driven by two mutually supporting interests: enterprise and ecology. Underpinning both these interests is the role of diversification. Through introducing a diversity of habitats together with a diversity of land uses our goal is to increase the productivity of the land, the number of people it employs, and the variety of wildlife it sustains, whilst at the same time working to reduce our environmental impact on both the land and the surrounding area.

20,000 new trees planted at Lofftwen.

All native, fruit-bearing species, designed to feed birds and wildlife.

This time, with more space and light built in.

Now we wait to see what it brings.

Over 150,000 trees planted here over time.

Follow to see how it develops.

The first calves to be born at Lofftwen for many a year! A huge shout out to Graham (who also contributed the first image of Spring and her calf Wendolyn), Carlie, Toby & Emma for their hard work caring for these beautiful animals. Their commitment is second to none. And enormous congratulations to these beautiful beasts themselves and all the wonderful work they do helping support nature at Lofftwen. It’s an enormous privilege watching them work and live together in proper family groups.

My first ever photograph of a Tawny Owl. We hear them all the time but I’ve never actually seen one, but I was tipped off about this one chilling in one of our Dutch barns. Very difficult lighting conditions and no tripod, so quite pleased that I can even tell it’s a Tawny!

Yes! I finally caught something on my wildlife camera 😬😂

Last week saw the start of a new exciting project at Lofftwen in collaboration with Llanwrtyd Community Association.

Huge thanks to Coed Cadw for donating over 600 saplings and to Freshwater Habitats’ Trust for digging a fantastic wildlife pond. Wonderful things happen when we work together, and we couldn’t have got here without their help and the help many other individuals too. More on this project coming soon!

Gotcha!

Feels like a momentous day. First ever sighting of pine marten at Lofftwen. I haven’t been able to stop smiling since we got the news.

I’m told (by people way more knowledgeable than me) that this is probably a male (the bushy tail) and that it is resident at Lofftwen rather than passing through. Also, most likely an offspring from the brilliant Vincent Wildlife Trust’s Pine Marten Recovery Project that started in 2015, only 3 years before these trees were planted. It’s a sign of just how quickly nature can recover. And hopefully the first sighting of many more to come.

If you are able then please support this great campaign 🙏💪

I believe this might be the remnants of a rare Pink or Ballerina Waxcap, an important grassland fungi and indicator of ancient meadows. Any mycologists out there who might be able to confirm?loveplants

Our first appearance on television. It’s a lovely piece on the Longhouse we restored. With Covid interruptions it took about 4 years to complete. But it’s been well worth it. Thanks to the filming team Boom Cymru who did a great job capturing the spirit of the building and looked after the place perfectly. and thanks for the nice words from the Cartrefi Cymru hosts. Diolch!
