I was recently asked this week by a client to design some cookies based on Raksha Bandhan. Having never heard of this beautiful celebration before, I asked her to explain it to me. She told me that it is a Hindu festival celebrating the special bond between brothers and sisters.
I decided to do a little research myself, and I discovered that traditionally:
• The sister ties a decorative thread or bracelet, called a rakhi, around her brother’s wrist.
• She offers prayers for his wellbeing and prosperity.
• The brother promises to protect and support his sister and gives her a gift.
• Families come together, often sharing sweets and celebrating their bond.
At its core, it is a celebration of love, affection, mutual care and family, rather than merely a brother’s duty to protect his sister.
I absolutely love this. ❤️ What a beautiful celebration of the unique and precious bond between a brother and sister. Learning about it immediately made me think of my own late brother and the special bond we shared while growing up. It brought back many lovely memories and reminded me just how precious that sibling connection can be.
I feel truly honoured to have been asked to make these cookies to celebrate my client’s love for her brothers, and I also understand her cousin.
What an amazing and beautiful celebration of family, love, and the bonds that stay with us throughout our lives. ❤️
