ABOUT US
Robbie and Fiona Mackay as well as their truly amazing, dedicated team created a fantastic General Store where traditional Highland fare meets international food, where organic meets wholefood, where haggis meets hummus. Where locals meet visitors and where everyone receives a warm welcome with a big smile accompanied by the smell of fresh coffee and freshly baked croissants in morning. T
he Mackays are proud of their little shop and their community, which truly shows in this lovely hidden gem in the Far North-Western Highlands. OUR MISSION
The Durness Shop is not your average store, but so much more. Fiona and Robbie put heart and soul into their mission to create not only an outstanding General store offering the best products for locals and visitors alike, but also a place where locals can meet and share stories. The Mackays always offer a helping hand and an open ear and to their team, friends and customers. They do their very best to be ethical and responsible, constantly trying to adapt to the fast pace of modern times. It is not an easy task, yet they do try to make the world a wee bit better by continuously reducing their carbon footprint, supporting local businesses and promoting organic as well as wholefood products while preserving their Highlands roots at the same time, adhering to the oh so true slogan “Buy Local or Bye Bye Local”. OUR STORY
It all began back in the times, when Robbie’s great-great-grandfather started the business as a Highland merchant and traveller selling groceries from his home opposite the street formerly known as “Parkhill Hotel”, now Mackay’s Rooms. Robbie’s Father, Richard “Dickie” Mackay, used to do home deliveries to locals around the area before the days of cars, which the Mackays soon hope to do again come full circle (except with a little help from our friend called “The Internet”, which does make life a bit easier). Through the years business has adapted and developed, but has always continued to support our precious local community. Recently, our lovely Durness Shop has undergone a week of rejuvenation for full refurbishment to future-proof the store and adapt to the changing world. The Durness Shop has a history that one can feel and that is worth preserving. While adapting to the ever changing world, The Durness Shops always stays true to its mission to provide locals and the area with the best products and services. SERVICES
