What does mean to people?

John, age 93
We spoke to a neighbour of John who told us how much it meant for him to have a parcel back in 2022.

‘John does so much for everyone and never thinks of themself. During Covid he was going around picking up prescriptions and running back and fore to the shops. He doesn’t like any fuss or anything in return.’

‘Sadly he’s been on his own for Christmas since his wife passed away about 20 years ago, and he hasn’t got any family local to him.’

‘He’s too proud to admit that he needs help, so we arranged for him to have a parcel from in 2022. It contained everything he needed to give himself a treat on Christmas day.’

‘He called round after it was delivered and burst into tears because he was so grateful for the parcel and would have something to look forward to on Christmas day.’

‘He also appreciated the little bottle of whiskey we gave him and would be toasting his old comrades from the Korean War after the King’s Speech.’

What does mean to people?

‘My husband lost his job, the mortgage repayments had gone up, and the car failed the MOT. Everything seemed to happen at the same time and we were so worried about how we could afford Christmas.’

‘We were trying to get temporary Christmas work so that we pay the mortgage, and try and put something aside for the kid’s Christmas presents, but it was a struggle.’

‘You’re bombarded these days with adverts for this toy, and that toy, and there’s a pressure on you to have the perfect Christmas.’

‘The food hamper was arranged through a support agency and we couldn’t believe it when it arrived. Someone had thought of us and was giving us some treats for Christmas. It wasn’t turkey and all the trimmings but it was what we needed and we didn’t have to worry about Christmas dinner.’

‘It even came with some chocolates and a few presents so we used the money we saved to get extra little bits for the kids.’
