Banana talk and logistics and why it is with great sadness I have to dismantle the illusionary qualities of these fabulous plants. These are the ‘hardy’ Musa basjoo, all in an effort to get in there before things gets too cold and dank….!

Not many of these left to talk about before the colder weather winds things up for some of the key plants so here’s an arrangement that I’ve really enjoyed this season:
Quercus ilex
Salvia uliginosa
Dahlia ‘Hayley Jane’
Salvia ‘Pink Amistad’
Cotinus ‘Grace’
Persicaria
Stipa tenuissima
Geranium ‘Orkney Cherry’
Salvia ‘Roman Red’
Salvia ‘Amistad’

Devil’s bit Scabious aka Succisa pratensis growing in a large planter with Plectranthus, Salvia ‘Pink Amistad’ and a dark leaved Japanese maple.
Bit of an experiment to see how it fared as well as looked, and overall, I’d say not bad.
Easy native to raise from seed and you have to doff your cap to its impressively long flowering period.

Less is more is a mantra I’m increasingly drawn to in plant selection and use in the garden with this being a firm favourite; combining the impressively long, floriferous qualities of Persicaria amplexicaulis and the lofty biscuit coloured stems and flower heads of Calamagrostis

Begonia grandis subsp. evansiana is a fabulous plant that we’ve been growing for the last decade. Unlike the rest of its clan this particular Begonja is amazingly resilient. It’s interesting reading its hardiness rating on the RHS website where it says it won’t survive being frozen but in my experience it’s tougher than that. I love how freely it seeds around and if you grow it near gravel it will merrily spread itself around. The seed is best sown on the surface of some good quality multi purpose soil and then covered with a fine layer of horticultural grit. Germination can take a while but when it happens it’s fast! I love the flowers it produces in late summer but for me it’s the beautifully shape leaves that look the part.
