Day 5 of my Carers Week series.

One thing I wish more people understood about being a parent carer is that there is often a lot going on behind the scenes that nobody sees.

If I’m quiet on social media, behind on emails, or taking a little longer than usual to get through my to-do list, it’s rarely because I don’t care.

More often than not, I’ve been spending my energy elsewhere.

Supporting, advocating, organising, planning, worrying, adapting… and then trying to fit running a business around all of that.

Most parent carers become very good at carrying on, which means much of what we do goes unnoticed.

So if you’re a parent carer and things feel a little overwhelming at times, you’re not alone.

Sometimes simply getting through the day is enough.

Day 4 of my Carers Week series.
One thing being a parent carer has taught me is to celebrate the small wins.

A smooth morning. A successful school drop-off. Everyone getting where they need to be.

They might seem like small things, but they can have a huge impact on the rest of my day.

When things start calmly, I’m able to focus better, think more clearly and get on with running my business. On more challenging days, it can take a lot more energy just to reach the same point.

Over the years, I’ve learnt that a calmer household usually means a calmer me.

And a calmer me means I’m more organised, more productive and able to show up better for both my family and my business.

So today, I’m celebrating the small wins.
What’s a small win you’ve celebrated recently? ❤️

Day 3 of my Carers Week series.

When I started my business, I had a very different idea of what the future would look like.

Life had other plans.

Over the years, I’ve learnt that success isn’t always about growth, bigger goals or doing more. Sometimes it’s about adapting, changing direction and creating a business that works for the life you’re living right now.

For those of us who are carers or parent carers, our circumstances are often very different to the average business owner.

So if your business doesn’t look how you imagined it would, or if you’ve had to slow down, say no to opportunities or rethink your plans, please be kind to yourself.

You’re doing more than most people realise.

Day 2 of my Carers Week series.

One of the biggest reasons I shifted to self employment was flexibility.

Every consultation, admin session, email, cake order and delivery is planned around school runs, appointments and family life. It’s something that many people probably don’t see when they look at my business from the outside.

The reality of being a parent carer is that sometimes priorities have to change. A day can look completely different to how it was planned when you wake up in the morning.

Being self employed doesn’t necessarily mean working less. In fact, there are plenty of evenings and weekends where I’m catching up on work after everything else has been dealt with.

But it does mean I can be there when my family need me most.

For me, that’s one of the greatest gifts of running my own business.

Today marks the start of Carers Week, and I wanted to share something a little more personal.

I’m a parent carer and for a long time, I never really thought of myself as a carer. I’m their mum. Looking after my children is simply what I do.

But over the years, I’ve realised that parent carers often carry a very different mental load to what people might imagine. There is a lot of planning, advocating, supporting, worrying, adapting and sometimes just getting through the day one step at a time.

When I left teaching and focused fully on my cake business, flexibility was the biggest part of that decision. I needed to create a source of income that could work around my family and allow me to be present when I was needed most.

It has shaped the way I run my business, the boundaries I have, the hours I work and the decisions I make.

This week, I’ll be sharing a few glimpses into life behind the scenes as a business owner and parent carer. Not because I have all the answers, but because I know there are many other parents quietly juggling the same things every day.

This year’s theme is “building carer friendly communities” - calling for better recognition and support for unpaid carers. Those that have to adapt their lives to care for the ones they love.

If you’re a parent carer too, I’d love to know you’re here ❤️

Not my usual style of cake, but got my hands on this trend a few weeks ago!
Modern, romantic and such a lovely alternative to a traditional tiered cake.
