“Storytelling is the most powerful way to build emotional connections”

This brilliant comment, which came from a Head of DE&I yesterday on what they love about StoryTagger, really resonates.

Empowering people to share their own experiences, in their own words, on video is a powerful way to raise awareness and support change.

By taking a storytelling approach to DE&I, and important aspects of the employee experience, you’ll help to connect with people and shift both perspectives and behaviours.

A lot of the teams we speak to plan quarterly activities which align to their overarching DE&I and wellbeing goals. Both national and global awareness days play a big role in helping employees talk about what these themes mean to them. And, they enable everyone who participates to be part of a bigger conversation which straddles different communities, organisations and countries.

Getting ready to welcome a new cohort of graduates or apprentices this September?

Whether it’s face-to-face, digital or hybrid their onboarding experience matters to how aligned they feel to your company values, the impact they can make in role and whether they see a future with your company.

Research from many sources from Pearson Education to Techsmith show that video is the medium of choice for this audience. Plus, the Edelman Trust Barometer 2022 survey reported that co-workers are the most trusted source of information after scientists. So, there’s a huge amount of benefit from combining the two.

Build trust and a purpose-led, consistent experience with authentic, diverse and inclusive employee stories and leader welcomes:

• Show career paths and opportunities
• Support and skills development available
• How people relate to company values and core purpose
• New starts can reflect and share their own key moments to raise their profile and support the next cohort

How will you use stories to bring learning to life and make innovation happen?

Chance or sporadic encounters which are so important for innovation still don’t happen virtually.

So, we not only need innovative ways to spark exchange and ideas asynchronously, we also need to help everyone in an organisation understand WHY this matters and WHY they need to be part of positive change and incremental improvement.

Real stories from people in different functions (not just the Innovation team!!) sharing how they role model values like ‘curiosity’ or implemented a brilliant idea is a great way to show we all have a part to play.

What are you doing to celebrate Learning at Work Week?

Starting on May 16th, this year’s theme is ‘Learning Uncovered’, and organisations have planned week and month-long campaigns to promote their programmes, spark curiosity and encourage people to practice new skills.

However, without storytelling, it’s hard to make learning part of your DNA. It’s those unforgettable lived experiences and nuggets of tacit knowledge which connect people and make your organisation a learning organisation.

To support LAWW this year, we’ve added a series of five special stories to our template library which make it easy for teams to organise impactful activities around three sub themes:

🔎 Uncover Learning Potential
Share how you make learning a habit
Capture tips on how people develop a learning mindset.

🔎 Uncover Hidden Powers
What’s your hidden power?
Ask people to share their hidden power to showcase their talent or skill and how they use it at work. It’s a great way to make them feel valued and teach others.

🔎 Uncover New Dimensions
How can we reach Net Zero?
Tackle one of our biggest global challenges by sourcing actionable ideas (big and small) while helping people practice their digital, communication and storytelling skills.

Of course, learning isn't just for Learning at Work Week! So, we'll make sure these topics are evergreen.

Everyone needs to feel safe at work - it’s the most fundamental employee right. However, while most compliance-based learning initiatives aim to change behaviour, not just box tick, they often fail to connect with the whole workforce.

Even the best drama scenarios can fail to drive messages home. But, seeing a relatable colleague share their real experience is a hard-hitting and transformative moment which really communicates WHY it matters to do the right thing. And, what happens if we don’t.

Here are just some of the real stories we see making a difference:

✅ Responding effectively to occupational violence and aggression on the frontline
🚫 Safe lifting, manual handling and what happens if you don’t follow these guidelines
✅ Attitudes towards information security to shift understanding and action

These stories are curated and included in online compliance learning, internal communications, team huddles, used to spark workshop conversations, reflective practice or in a campaign over time.

How did digital transformation leave storytelling behind? And, why does this matter?

While employees share billions of messages across countless channels, storytelling as we know it has struggled to gain traction at work. Fast-changing organisations have found it difficult to unlock tacit knowledge or lived experiences, digitally, and it’s become harder to win hearts and minds. There’s a lot at stake.

Check out our new guide to see how you can reshape work culture through a constant flow of employee stories:
