This Friday 7 July - Louise Wilson will be demonstrating enameling.

This is a very decorative and fashionable technique which can produce an unusual effect on cakes of all types. An outline of a design is transferred to the sugarpaste and then over piped along the edges. The areas produced are then filled in with piping gel of various colours which gives the finished design a lovely gloss. The areas could also be filled in with royal icing if preferred. This type of decoration is very useful for art deco cakes or can be used as part of a larger decoration.

Louise is a very experienced cake decorator and will pass on all her techniques and tips so you can have a go at this type of decoration. She will also be happy to answer any questions.

Come and join us for the evening and learn a new technique - the Club needs your support.

Looking forward to seeing you

This month Terri Simmons will be demonstrating wafer flowers.

These are flowers made from edible paper usually made from rice or potato flour. This produces delicate and pretty flowers which can be made in a variety of shapes, sizes and colours. They are light and so are ideal for decorating any type of cake.

Terri is avery experienced cake decorator and her demonstrations are always interesting and packed with lots of information and ideas. She is always happy to answer questions

Wafer flowers are very popoular at the moment so come along and learn how to make them at a fraction of the cost of bought ones.

We look forward to seeing you as the Club needs your support.

Please see the following, very sad message from our Chairman Sue

I know a lot of you will be very sad to learn of the death of Eileen Sturgess, a long time club member, on 19th February after a short illness.

Eileen was a founder member of Sugar Crystals and was a valuable member of our Committee for many years until recently. She was very supportive of the club and made every effort to attend meetings. She always showed a lively interest in the cake demonstrations and often asked the cake demonstrator interesting questions.

She was passionate about sugarcraft and produced many celebration cakes especially for family and friends. Even at the age of 85 she made her granddaughter’s wedding cake and so should be an inspiration to us all to continue with our cake decorating.

To many of our members she will be remembered as ‘the sausage roll lady’ producing a tray of delicious rolls for our Christmas party and much enjoyed by all. In recent years it was with trepidation that I asked if she was still able to produce our usual batch to which she would reply ‘it’s not me you want (to attend) it’s my sausage rolls’! This could not be further from the truth and we always had a good giggle about it. Eileen was fun and will be very much missed by us all.

Our thoughts are with her family and many friends at this sad time.

A Memorial Service and Celebration of Eileen’s life has been arranged for Monday 13th March at St John’s Church, Broadbridge Heath at around 2pm. All Sugar Crystal members are welcome to attend

Only flowers have been requested and we intend to send a spray of flowers. Those of you who knew Eileen well may like to make a contribution – please let me know.

On Friday's meeting Lynette demonstrated how to make a spring flower arrangement. This included creating a tree stump with little grassy mounds (textured using a scourer and also using a tea-strainer). The snowdrops, primroses and violets were then made as well as leaves for each type of flower. The arrangement at the end could be used on any Spring or Easter cake. If it's for a younger child a small rabbit or chick might finish things off beautifully.

A BIG THANK YOU to Lynette, for stepping in to do the demonstration for us all.
Have a good month and look forward to seeing you at next months meeting.

Hi

Unfortunately due to illness we are having to change the scheduled demonstration. Lynette Cozzi has kindly stepped in at short notice and will be demonstrating a plaque with a tree, log and a selection of spring flowers including snowdrops and violets.

Lynette is a very skilled demonstrator and always produces lovely detailed flowers and leaves.

The cupcake demonstration will now take place next month on 7 April and will be cupcake flowers and cupcakes for special occasions.

Well a week has gone past since our lovely Christmas meeting, thank you ladies for all your hard work - lovely food and drink, fabulous raffle prizes and probably more importantly your company!

A very big thank you to Caroline for stepping in at the last minute to do the final demonstration of the year. In the demonstration Caroline made very simple, yet effective Choir boys out of Walnut Whips and beautiful cake toppers using Patchwork cutters, brush embroidery and a little sparkle.

We will look forward to seeing you in the new year but in the meantime, we'd just like to wish you all a very merry Christmas with a happy and healthy New Year. Xx

Hi just to say Cakes With A Character are coming to this months meeting, but it may be our last with all of our stock, for a while. So come and have a look at Christmas cake decorations and why not pick up a present or two for yourself or a friend. Remember if there is anything specifically you'd like, let me know before 6pm tomorrow and if I have it, I'll bring it with me.
Many thanks and I'll look forward to seeing you all there. X
