Weaning time on the farm! 🐄

And when I say "calves"… these lads and lasses are nearly a year old now and pretty much the same size as their mums! 😂 They grow so fast.

Grace is on hand to help, of course — our three-legged farmhand, ready and waiting to do what she does best. 🐕 Honestly, we couldn't manage without her.

It's all part of the natural rhythm of the farm — the little ones growing up strong, ready for the next stage. Slow-grown, grass-fed, and never rushed. That's how we do it. 🌾

Here's a bit of farming you might not expect… 🐄📡

We use virtual fencing collars on some of our cattle — and honestly, they're brilliant. Where these cows are grazing, there's no physical fencing at all — not a single post or wire — and yet not one escape! The collars teach them where their boundaries are, and they just… stick to them. Clever things.

Even better, we can keep track of them all via an app on the phone, so we always know exactly where they are. (If only it worked on a certain escape-artist bull… 😅)

We've got 5 working beautifully and we're saving hard for more — they're £230 each, but worth every penny. Someone asked me this week how far our pork travels. So I worked it out.

Born here at Unthank. Ten miles to the abattoir at Calow. Then over to our butcher at Ashover to be cut. Then I get in the truck and fetch it home myself.

All in, about twenty miles from the field to your fridge. Half of that with me driving it.

Compare that to most pork on a supermarket shelf. A lot of it isn't even British — it comes in from Europe, sits in a distribution centre somewhere, then gets moved again to the store. Nobody involved has met the pig.

I'm not saying that to be sniffy about it. Cheap pork exists for a reason and I understand why people buy it.

But if you've ever wondered what you're actually paying for when you buy direct from a farm, that's part of it. Twenty miles, three sets of hands, and all of us within a morning's drive of each other.

Oh, I'm SO proud of my girls and boys today! 🐷🥰

Our pigs have come back from grading, and honestly, I could burst — nearly every single one graded S, the very top grade there is, with the rest just a whisker behind at E. 🌟

And do you know what makes me happiest? It's not us patting ourselves on the back — it's someone completely independent looking at our pigs and going "yep, these are the real deal." It's the pork version of our AGW beef certification. Proper proof, in black and white.

But honestly, I already knew. Because I see these pigs every single day — out in the fields, noses in the muck, snoozing in the sunshine, living exactly the life a pig should. All that space, all that fresh air, all that time… you simply can't fake it. And it shows, right there in the grading and on your plate.

I'm properly chuffed. 🖤

Oh, Danny Boy. 🙄🐄

We turned our bull back out with his lovely ladies, thinking he'd be over the moon… but no. Not happy. And somehow STILL finding his way out of the field, bold as brass!

So that's it — he's made the decision for us. He's coming into the shed where he can't cause any more mischief. Honestly, the characters we have on this farm! 😂

Anyone else got a stubborn one who thinks the rules don't apply to them?

Never thought we'd be so happy to see RAIN! 🌧️

It's been such a dry summer that our fields have really struggled. We didn't manage to get a second cut of grass this year — and that grass matters more than you might think.

You see, because our Dexters are truly grass-fed, grass is their ONLY food source, all year round — including right through winter. No grain, no concentrates, no shortcuts. Just grass. So a good crop to see us through the colder months is absolutely everything to us.

That's why this rain is such a welcome sight! Now we're keeping everything crossed that those fields green up and grow again.

Farming really is at the mercy of the weather — you take the good years with the tricky ones. Come on grass, do your thing! 🌾🤞
