Have you ever received a call from someone claiming to be from your bank, telling you there is an "urgent issue" with your account? Scammers are becoming incredibly convincing, but you can stay one step ahead with these simple steps:
1. Don't be polite, hang up immediately. If a call feels unexpected or pressured, just end it. A genuine bank will never mind you hanging up to stay safe.
2. Wait 10 minutes (or use a different phone). Fraudsters sometimes stay on the line to "intercept" your next call. Waiting ensures the line is actually clear.
3. Call them back on a trusted number. Never use a phone number given to you by the caller. Instead, use the number on the back of your bank card or the official one from the bankโs verified website.
4. Dial 159. In the UK, you can dial 159 to be securely connected to the fraud department of most major banks.
While the easiest way to reach your bankโs fraud team is often by dialling 159, here are the direct customer service and fraud prevention numbers for the UKโs most popular banks:
Barclays 0345 734 5345
Lloyds Bank 0345 300 0000
