This is my lovely Nan. I had a feeling when I took this picture that it might be our last together. Sadly, I was right — we said our goodbyes a few weeks ago.
She was one of my biggest inspirations for baking and cake decorating (and so many other things). When we were little, on our birthdays she would ask us to choose a cake from one of her cake decorating magazines — and then she would bring it to life for us. Looking back now, I realise just how lucky we were.
In our family, love has always been expressed through food. I’ll always be grateful for the love she poured into everything she made — the family Christmas hampers (which she took as seriously as if it were her career), the birthday cakes, the dinners and desserts, and all the baking she did for the community while fundraising for the Scouts.
When I look at our business today, there are so many values I carry forward from her — celebrating people, marking occasions, and showing love in a simple way. Plus, like her, I just like to feed people!
Her funeral is this week and we’ll be closing for a day, which means we won’t be able to offer our usual Mother’s Day deliveries this weekend. I’m so sorry about that and hope you’ll understand.
I also didn’t realise when I started writing this that it’s International Women’s Day. That feels fitting. So here’s a little reminder to hold the women you love close, celebrate their strength — and maybe bake them something lovely. It’s a bigger gesture than you might think. 💛
