🎂 11 YEARS OF ELLIEGANTLY MADE! 🎂

From my dream starting in 2012 to that first paid commission in 2015… 11 years ago today, Elliegantly Made officially became a thing.

Do you remember our original logo?! 🤷🏼‍♀️

Looking back at our very first wedding cake brings back so many memories. I absolutely adored creating that cake, every tiny handmade flower (yes flowers took an age even 11 years ago 😂), I was SO proud of it. I still am, because it was part of the beginning of everything that Elliegantly Made has become.

Fast forward 11 years and quite a lot has changed. The cakes have evolved, the logo has DEFINITELY evolved, and this little business has grown beyond anything I could have imagined back then.

There have been thousands of cakes, countless cupcakes and cookies, hundreds of weddings, some completely bonkers corporate creations, awards, ridiculously late nights, early morning deliveries, a few tears, a LOT of swearing 😂 and some incredible memories along the way.

But the important bit hasn’t changed.

I’ve always wanted to create cakes that don’t just look incredible, but taste incredible too, and to genuinely care about every celebration we’re trusted to be part of. 💜

So today I’m feeling incredibly grateful.

To every customer, friend and supporter who has trusted us, recommended us, shared a post, left a review or simply cheered us on, thank you. You are the reason we’re still here 11 years later.

Well… the out of office is officially ON! 🥳

It’s Bank Holiday weekend, it’s family time and, as if I needed another excuse to put the cake tools down for a few days, it’s my birthday today! 🎂🥂🎉

After what has been a slightly bonkers few weeks at EMHQ, I’m ridiculously excited to have a FULL Bank Holiday weekend off and spend it with some of my very favourite people. 💜

Benji is safely back from his Vietnam adventure, Ray and I aren’t delivering a wedding cake anywhere, and there isn’t a Cake Safe in sight! 😂

Instead, there will be family, friends, birthday celebrations, probably a few glasses of something fizzy… and apparently a BBQ in the rain. ☔️🍔😂

You honestly couldn’t write it after all the gorgeous weather we’ve been having!

So EMHQ is officially closed for the weekend. Messages and enquiries are very welcome, but I’ll be picking them back up after the Bank Holiday while I make the most of a very rare few days away from cakes. 🥰

Whatever you’re doing this Bank Holiday weekend, I hope you get to spend a little time with some of your favourite people too.

Now… where’s that fizz? 🥂😂

From a conversation to a scribbled drawing of a LOT of ideas… to this! 📝➡️🎂😍

We delivered this very special cake to The Deep yesterday to celebrate Louise’s retirement, and it’s fair to say this one has taken over EMHQ for the last few days! 🥴😂

The brief was to tell Louise’s story around one cake, with one side representing the career she is leaving behind and the other everything she has planned for the next chapter.

The blue side celebrates her career at The Deep, incorporating so many different elements of her working life through a mixture of handmade details, bas relief, edible prints, modelling and hand painting.

Then, as you travel around the cake, the colours gradually change from those watery blues into warm sunset tones… and we move into retirement. 🌅

Shakira in Egypt, the Maldives, cocktails, yoga, swimming, family history, her clarinet and, of course, the cats! 🐈‍⬛

All the things Louise is now looking forward to enjoying with a little more time on her hands.

I absolutely loved the idea of the cake itself making that journey from career to retirement, and there was something incredibly satisfying about watching all those completely different elements gradually come together into one design.

This is also exactly what we mean when we say corporate cakes don’t have to be simply a logo and company colours.

They can tell a story, celebrate the person behind the job and create something completely unique to mark a milestone.

And just to prove there really WAS a plan… swipe through to the final photo to see where this one started. 😂📝

Happy retirement, Louise! We hope you had an absolutely fabulous celebration and enjoy every minute of whatever comes next. 🥂

Sometimes the simplest looking cakes are the ones with absolutely nowhere to hide… 🤍🖤

No flowers. No big focal arrangement. No decoration strategically placed over something that isn’t quite perfect 🥴 Every tier, every edge and every detail has to do the talking.

And I think we nailed this one. 😍

Chelsea & Ben chose this gorgeous five-tier monochrome design for their wedding at OaklandsThe Grand Lodge.

We alternated beautifully crisp ribbed tiers with smooth tiers dotted with delicate edible pearls, finished with slim black ribbon detailing. Sitting right in the centre was our gorgeous corset tier from Prop Options, adding shape and interest without taking away from that incredibly clean design.

Then the gorgeous Rebecca from Twinkle Events Company worked her magic around it with draping, candles and monochrome florals, and suddenly the whole thing came together. 🥰

But my favourite part of these photos might actually be the last one…

Chelsea & Ben at one of our EMHQ Open Weekends, right back at the beginning of their cake journey with us, complete with their gorgeous little passenger! 🥹

They have been an absolute dream to work with from beginning to end, so seeing this fabulous photo of them cutting their cake, captured by the very talented Darren Hemsley Creative, is rather special.

And by all accounts Oaklands and The Singing Waiters gave everyone one hell of a night! 😂🎶 I’ve seen some of the videos and it looked INCREDIBLE!

The glamorous side of wedding season… 😂🎂

This was the boot of the car first thing this morning!

After a week of baking, filling, ganaching, decorating, flower making, boxing, lists and probably far too much tea, another delivery run is underway.

There’s an awful lot that happens at EMHQ before you see the finished cake sitting beautifully at a wedding venue, and getting it there safely is a whole operation in itself!

Our CakeSafe transport boxes have become absolutely paramount to the way we work. They not only protect the cakes but also help keep them at the right temperature throughout their journey, giving us that extra peace of mind when we’re out on the road.

They were a huge investment for our little business, and as EM has grown, so has the kit we need to do the job properly. We actually have THREE Cake Safes now! 😱🥰

Because creating your wedding cake is only half the job. Getting it safely to your venue and looking exactly as it should is every bit as important.

Once today’s precious cargo is safely delivered, something VERY unusual is happening at EMHQ…

I HAVE A WEEKEND OFF!! 🙌😂

And after collecting Benji from the airport last night following his three weeks in Vietnam, the timing couldn’t be better. We’re going out together and I fully intend to enjoy every minute of it. 😍

The cakes can have me back on Monday. 😂

It’s not ALL wedding cakes around here… promise! 😂🎂

I know you’re seeing rather a lot of them at the minute as we work our way through wedding season, but celebration cakes are still very much happening at EMHQ too!

And last week it was Teddy’s 5th birthday. 🥳

We’ve had the absolute pleasure of making every single one of Teddy’s birthday cakes, as well as his christening cake, his Mum & Dad’s wedding cake and now his little sister’s cakes too. 🥹💜

Although I have to say, as Teddy gets older his requests are definitely getting more challenging! 😂

This year he wanted superheroes and he was absolutely adamant there HAD to be a Hulk hand.

Now, how on earth could I disappoint one of my youngest (and favourite 😉) clients?!

So a Hulk hand he got… made from Rice Krispie treats and completely edible, obviously! 💚

And judging by the photos Mum sent me afterwards, I think we can safely say Teddy approved. 🤣🤣

Four weddings… four VERY different cakes! 🎂💜

One of the things I love most about wedding cakes is that no two couples are the same, so why should their cakes be?

These four all left EMHQ over the weekend and I don’t think they could be much more different if we tried!

We had rustic semi-naked with heaps of fresh fruit (and a cheeky little four-legged guest 🐶), elegant and understated with a handmade sugar rose and soft blush ribbon, a classic square design absolutely bursting with flowers, and a modern textured cake with an illuminated floral centre.

Four completely different styles. Four completely different wedding days. And that’s exactly how it should be. 😊

They’ve certainly kept us on the road too… over 250 miles of wedding cake deliveries this weekend! 🚗🎂

So… purely for fun because I KNOW I shouldn’t have favourites 😂… which one would you choose?

And while these four got to have their moment over the weekend, another one is currently boxed up safely in the car with us on its way to today’s wedding in Ravenscar… so Monday’s admin is looking slightly different this morning! 🚙 😊

Well… yesterday there were no cakes, no sugar flowers and no deliveries! 😂🥂🐎

Sometimes it’s good to step away, even when you’re ridiculously busy.

My to-do list has been planned with military precision this week because I knew I wanted to take yesterday off and spend the day at Beverley Races with these lovely ladies.

Everything that could be prepped in advance was done, admin shuffled around and the baking planned accordingly.

One thing we never compromise on at EMHQ is freshness. Every single one of our cakes is baked fresh here in our kitchen, so even with weddings on Saturday, Sunday and Monday, taking a day out yesterday doesn’t change that. The ovens are going to be VERY busy over the next few days! 😬😂

But yesterday was sunshine, fizz, horses, lots of laughs and, unbelievably, a rather lucky day on the betting too… I won on every race bar one!! 😂🐎💷

I’ll not be giving up the day job just yet though! 🤣

Sometimes I think you just need a day like that don’t you?

Anyway… back to reality today. Whites on, ovens on and let’s get these cakes made! 🎂💜🌈

Almost exactly a year ago we travelled to Hazlewood Castle with Adele & Gill’s wedding cake.. remember the cake with a handmade Margaret Merril rose in memory of Adele’s mum? 🥹

Fast forward a year and this weekend we had the absolute pleasure of creating another wedding cake for the same family, this time for Gill’s daughter Lauren and her new husband Joe at Oaklands

And what a cake!

Dusty blues, masses of gypsophila and an illuminated acrylic tier filled with fresh gyps running through the centre.

Because gypsophila is toxic and can’t be placed directly onto a cake, all of the gyps on the outside had to be handmade from wafer paper.

250 individual stems, each with four tiny petals… that’s 1,000 individually cut petals! 😱😳

We added handmade dusty blue flowers to finish the design and I even got to work alongside the lovely vanessajayne_floraldesigns again, who created the gorgeous fresh floral arrangements for both weddings.

Then this gorgeous message arrived from Lauren…

“Thank you so much for making our wedding cake! It was absolutely gorgeous! We have had so many compliments on how amazing it tasted. It really brought our vision together.”

From Adele & Gill last August to Lauren & Joe this August. What an absolute privilege to be trusted with another special day for the same family. 🥹💜

Well… it’s going to be a busy couple of weeks at EMHQ! 😳🎂

We have seven wedding cakes going out over seven days starting from the weekend, alongside all our other orders, so today has been very much about getting organised!

Stocking up on ingredients, checking lists (and checking them again! 😂), starting on sugar flowers and decorations and generally getting everything ready for the slightly organised chaos that is about to begin.

But I couldn’t let today go by without sharing this gorgeous chap who left EMHQ at the weekend 🐘🥰

Ian got in touch about a cake for Sue’s 60th birthday and pretty much gave me free rein with the design. He knew he wanted an elephant theme and left the rest to me… my favourite kind of brief! 💜

So we created this two-tier safari inspired cake, complete with a 3D elephant coming out of the cake, hand painted sunset, a handmade tree and even edible foliage for the leaves (microwave cake is the future 😉) 🌳🐘

I absolutely loved making this one and seeing him all come together.
