Today is a little special on our calendar, because 21 years ago today Ray and I got married 💜

Looking back at these photos one thing makes me smile more than anything else… we’ve always been a team.💜

Of course we’ve built a life together, but over the years we’ve also built Elliegantly Made together.

People often see me and the cakes, but behind the scenes Ray is the one helping load cars, carrying cake stands, setting up at wedding fayres, delivering cakes, making me cups of tea when deadlines are looming and generally keeping me fed, watered… and sane when wedding season is in full swing 😅

Running a business can be challenging at times, but having someone who believes in what you’re building and is willing to roll their sleeves up and help makes all the difference.

Today also marks the start of Humber Business Week and we’re looking forward to spending some time together at a few of the events over the coming days.

So here’s to 21 years of marriage, teamwork, friendship, support and somehow still liking each other after all this time 😂🥂💜

This weekend EMHQ will be full of wedding conversations, cake sketches, Pinterest boards, coffee… and probably a little bit of chaos too 😅

We’re getting ready to welcome 16 couples into EMHQ over the weekend for wedding consultations and I have to say this is one part of the wedding cake process that I’ll never get bored of 🥹💜

I absolutely love sitting down with couples, hearing all about their plans, how they met, the ideas they have for their big day and then starting to design a cake that feels personal to them rather than “just” a wedding cake.

Every couple is completely different and that’s what makes it so special. Some arrive with Pinterest boards and colour palettes, others arrive saying “we haven’t got a clue where to start” 😂 and I love both equally.

EMHQ was built to create a relaxed and personal space for exactly these moments and we can’t wait to welcome this weekend’s couples through the door 💜

And don’t worry if you couldn’t get an appointment this weekend, our next Wedding Open Weekend will be the 1st & 2nd August and appointments are already starting to book up ✨

Created a little bit of edible magic for Foxglove Supported Living’s 10th anniversary last week 💜✨

Jo contacted me to help celebrate the occasion and when she gave me free rein with the design, we knew we wanted to create something a little bit different for their celebration cake and cupcakes.

With a little help from John Redhead Creative, we managed to make the foxglove from their logo disappear… so I could recreate it by hand as a handmade sugar flower instead 🥹🌸

And honestly… this was a first for me with sugar foxgloves, but definitely not the last because I absolutely loved creating them.

Some cakes are stressful… and some cakes are my happy place, especially when it has handmade sugar flowers 💜

This semi-naked wedding cake delivered to Tickton Grange on Saturday was definitely one that genuinely made me smile 🥹

Rachel sent over a list of her bouquet for me to create handmade sugar flowers from, which has always been my happy place.

I created beautiful ivory roses, blue delphiniums and ruscus but it was the white freesias that had my heart. They were one of my mum’s favourite flowers and it always brings back such beautiful memories of her when I create them. They tied in beautifully with both the decor in the Rose Room and Rachel & Sean’s wedding florals.

There’s something so lovely about creating edible flowers for a wedding cake. They are so incredibly personal and when I see them on a cake, it’s one of those moments where I genuinely think… “yes, this is exactly why I love what I do.” 💜

And a little shoutout as well to Cakes by Leni for helping Rachel & Sean with cake pops for their day. I’ve always said there’s no competition when it comes to local businesses offering similar services and sometimes we all need each other’s help 🥰

I don’t offer cake pops myself, so I was more than happy to recommend another lovely local business. Supporting each other is so important 💜

Over the last week I think every cake maker in the UK has collectively been staring at the weather app in mild panic! 😂☀️

With temperatures in some parts of the UK hitting a record breaking 35° this weekend, wedding cakes and buttercream definitely become a little more… adventurous 🥴

When we built EMHQ into what used to be our dining room at home, one thing I absolutely insisted on was air conditioning. At the time it felt like a huge expense, but honestly this weekend alone it’s proved why it was worth every penny.

When you’re working with buttercream, chocolate and stacked wedding cakes in this kind of heat, temperature control becomes SO important and having a proper bespoke workspace at home really does make all the difference.

People often see the finished cake, but not always the behind the scenes panic of:
🚗 transporting cakes in the heat
❄️ checking temperatures constantly
🧁 buttercream deciding it suddenly wants to retire
😅 and me stress checking everything approximately 700 times.

Safe to say EMHQ and the air con have definitely earned their keep this weekend. After wedding cake deliveries on Saturday I was luckily enough to have the rest of the bank holiday weekend off from work to enjoy the sunshine, sort the garden and have a catch up with friends 💜

Now excuse me while we take a couple of days off and I survive on iced drinks, white wine, sunshine and not an ounce of buttercream to stress over 😅

Last Wednesday I headed over to The Business Culture HEY’s “Civilised Speed Networking” event… and it was nothing that I expected 😅💜

Networking events can sometimes feel a little overwhelming for me, especially the speed networking style ones (actually I think the last one I did was speed dating over 30 years ago 😂), but this was such a lovely relaxed atmosphere with proper conversations, lots of laughter and some fantastic businesses in the room.

It was really nice catching up with familiar faces, meeting some new people and hearing all about everyone’s businesses without feeling like you needed a lie down afterwards 😂

A huge well done to Tony, Michelle and the whole team for putting together something a little bit different and making everyone feel so welcome 👏

I think sometimes people forget how important these events are for small businesses. So many conversations, collaborations, opportunities and friendships start in rooms just like this 💜

Now to follow up with a cuppa 😊

Well… we didn’t win last night at the I Do Magazine Wedding Awards 😔💜

And yes of course there’s disappointment because when you put your heart and soul into something you always secretly hope… but honestly the category was tight and we still had such a lovely evening 🥹

To even reach the finals for the second year running alongside so many incredible wedding suppliers across Yorkshire still feels really special and something I’m incredibly proud of.

Huge congratulations to Nelly’s Sweet Treats and to all the winners from the evening 👏

The night itself was fantastic, brilliantly compered by Stephanie Hirst and together an amazing £3360 was raised in the raffle for Freddie’s Stars which is just incredible 💜

And of course… it wouldn’t be a proper night out for me if I didn’t somehow come home sporting a completely different hairstyle to the one I left with 😂

Now excuse me while I survive today on caffeine (which I don’t drink but I’ll treat myself to a latte🤣), adrenaline and very little sleep 💤

Ray and I are currently sat on the train heading over to Sheffield for tonight’s I Do Wedding Awards Final at Cutlers’ Hall and I’m feeling so proud and grateful (and OK a little emotional too)💜

It’s not just the finished cake, it’s everything that goes on behind the scenes to get it there. The consultations, the sketching designs, the planning things out at silly o’clock, the deliveries, the mountains of washing up, the stress levels when travelling with a wedding cake in the car 😅 and genuinely caring so much about getting everything just right for every couple.

We really do pour everything into Elliegantly Made, so to be recognised alongside some incredible wedding suppliers across Yorkshire and to have reached the final for the second year running really is incredibly special 💜

A huge thank you to all our customers for putting us forward and to our supporters, friends and family for all the lovely messages and well wishes. It really does mean the world.

Now… fingers crossed for tonight 🤞🏼✨

These weekends are always such a lovely part of the process. Sitting down together, chatting through your ideas and starting to bring your plans to life 🥹
