Opening our doors for the first time on 1st April 1960, Hume’s Bakery has sat at the heart of Halstead High Street for more than six decades. Prior to opening in Halstead, Dennis’ father had taken over a small bakery in the village of Bures – but when Dennis returned from national service and decided to follow in the family tradition, bigger premises were needed. We bought the shop for just £5,000
from the flour millers. Ann, Dennis’ wife, joined the Humes in 1962.
2010 was our Golden Year as we celebrated half a century of trading in Halstead, which was celebrated with our loyal customers and staff on the 1st April – 50 years to the date we opened. To top off a fantastic year, we also celebrated being named as Essex Baker of the Year! We are a small family run bakery in the market town, Halstead. Originally opened by Ann and Dennis Hume in 1960, beforehand Dennis’ father owned a small bakery in Bures. Six decades on, the shop is now run jointly by Ann and Dennis’ children, Adrian and Judith
We’ve seen young children become parents, and then become grandparents. We’ve been there through it all. We've become known as 'Halstead's bakery'
