I learnt some very important lesson recently with one of my cakes.
Iv been decorating cakes from home for quite a few years now and as a fully qualified cake decorator I always strive for perfection.
It's so common these days for customers to go online and send you designs they have found that they like and want you to create something similar. Then once in a blue moon you will get given full control over design ( normally this is where I excel and more often than not have to scale back my designs).
But this time I came up with an idea and then talked myself out of it last minute. I then scrolled through the internet looking for inspiration. I thought I had found the perfect design and so ordered in everything I would need. I spent hours decorating this cake and at the end of it I stood back, tired, covered in icing and food colouring and looked at a cake that failed to wow me at all. I went to bed extremely unhappy with the finished look and no idea how to change it.
The next day I woke up and went to have another look ( maybe I would like it more with fresh eyes ) , unfortunately this wasn't the case. So with just a few hours before it was getting picked up I decided to take most of the decoration off and I decorated with a similar design to what I had first thought of. I was so much happier with it second time around.
It was an extremely risky move to remove so much of the decoration and redo the design but thankfully it payed off. The customer loved it and at the end of the day that's all I want.
So the lessons learnt were -
β’ always go with your gut instinct
β’ sometimes bold risks pay off the most
β’ be confident when doing something different
β’ don't panic , trust in your abilities
β’ sometimes you have to walk away to see things clearer
β’ there's always room to learn, grow and improve no matter what
β’ even the best people have off days
β’ it's never too late to learn something new
