Helaina's Happy Hedgehogs Childminding

Helaina's Happy Hedgehogs Childminding Qualified Early Years Teacher & Outstanding-rated Childminder creating engaging learning experiences & environments where children can thrive.

Passionate about high-quality care & education, outdoor adventures, & giving every child the best start in life. Helaina lives in Guisborough with her husband. Her home is detached with a front and enclosed back garden, which is situated in a quiet cul-de-sac. Helaina has had the pleasure of supporting many families through childminding over the past several years. Prior to becoming a Childminder,

she thoroughly enjoyed working as an Early Years Teacher for 11 years. Helaina has had a positive effect on the lives of many children and their families whom she has worked with. Although Helaina felt that her job as an experienced Early Years Teacher was extremely rewarding, she decided to start childminding because she wished to work with children in a calm home environment with a lower ratio of children. Doing so enables Helaina to provide children with an outstanding quality of care and education, which is Helaina's desire. Helaina feels her strengths are demonstrated best by caring for young children who demonstrate emotional difficulties. She also considers herself to be a valuable asset to families who have decided to defer school attendance and support children leading up to the start of school. Helaina has a wealth of experience caring for newborns up to teenagers and she loves working with children. Her enthusiasm and excitement are apparent to the children she is in contact with, which encourages children to feel happy to 'have a go' and thus learn and develop. Helaina caters for the needs and interests of all the children she cares for. She does so by providing the best possible learning experiences, both indoor and out. Based on children's interests, Helaina plans activities for children to learn through play, since she believes that play is essential to all aspects of children's development and learning. She cooks healthy organic meals with the children and enjoys baking with them too, as she sees how much enjoyment and learning the children gain from such activities. Helaina also has much experience working along with parents and other professionals. She is keen to offer any help that she can to such ones, in order to support the children and their families. Helaina holds a Paediatric First Aid and a food hygiene certificate. She keeps her Continued Professional Development up to date including the renewal of 'Safeguarding Children' training. Helaina is also qualified as an Advanced Swimming Instructor, enabling her to teach the fundamentals of swimming to all ages and abilities. With parental permission, she teaches her childminded children to swim whenever the opportunity arises. Helaina was thrilled to have been appointed as an Area Lead and Mentor for the Department for Education Early Years COVID-19 Recovery Programme. The training she has received prior to starting in this role and the knowledge and experience she gains through working with other childminders, enhances her outstanding practice as an Early Years Professional.

What a treat today’s Tiny Tweeties session was! 🦁🐒🐍

My Happy 🦔s loved the wild animals theme, and with it being a lovely quiet session, everyone had plenty of opportunities to join in. Being in Chris' band was definitely a highlight. 🎸

A huge thank you to Tiny Tweeties for another fantastic morning and to Northern Lights Early Years Stronger Practice Hub : North East for providing the session and our new book. We enjoyed sharing it together afterwards before dancing to one of our favourite songs, The Penguin Song 🐧🎶

Fellow childminders, don't forget to check the Northern Lights Strong Practice Hub newsletters and get booked onto the next session. I believe it will be the last one for Redcar until they are back in September!

🐸💦🪷 My Happy 🦔s have been learning about the life cycle of a frog and looking out for tadpoles and frogs during our outdoor adventures. Inspired by this interest, we practised two footed jumps like frogs and explored sound discrimination/manipulation by making deep frog croaks 🗣️ and creating frog sounds with musical instruments 👂🏻.

Together, we made a bog and gathered props to support our frog-themed rhyming story 🐸 🪵 🐕📖. The children also brought number recognition 🔢 into their play and learned to count back from 5 to 0 through singing and acting out Five Little Speckled Frogs 🎶.

Their play has been full of beautiful chatter, teamwork and creativity as they collected resources to create and adapt their own play. 🤩

🔢🇯🇵 Numbers are part of our everyday learning, so we extended our exploration of Japan by sitting on the floor, as is common in Japanese culture, and painting (with water) the Japanese numbers 1–10. We also learned how to pronounce each number, which the children thoroughly enjoyed.

Then, whilst the younger children enjoyed the freedom to mark make, the older children, who were particularly engaged in the activity, challenged themselves further by carefully copying the Japanese symbols for 0 and 100. They showed great concentration, perseverance and pride in their achievements. 🌟🖌️

We made the most of the beautiful blossom, just like they do in Japan 🌸. We sat, played and laid beneath the trees, and the children could understand why the character in our story thought snow was falling when it was “snowing blossom”. 🍃🌸

My Happy 🦔s loved telling passers-by how people in Japan enjoy relaxing and picnicking under blossom trees, just like we were doing. We also learnt more about Japan, enjoyed fruity Japanese tea, and visited the beautiful paper blossom tree at Saltburn Library.

One of our lovely families kindly gave each child a plain fan, which we decorated with blossom branches inspired by the ones the children had been exploring in our blossom area. 🌸

I love finding meaningful, hands-on ways to teach children about cultures and celebrations from around the world through play, stories & real experiences. 🌏❤️

Our interest in dinosaurs has inspired lots of curiosity and imaginative play for my Happy 🦔s 🦕🦖

The dinosaur-themed Tiny Tweeties session and Kirkleatham’s dinosaur exhibition were perfectly timed and supported our learning beautifully. After our visit to Teessaurus Park, we enjoyed researching dinosaurs further, discovering interesting facts and creating our own dinosaur fact signs.

There has also been lots of dinosaur role play in our dinosaur area, including a dinosaur nest with big dino eggs which the children handled with great care and curiosity 🥚🦕🪺🌿

Our superhero-themed session with Tiny Tweeties was a supercharged session of heroic fun 💥🦸‍♂️

Rachel must sleep as well as I do 😆, because the energy she brings is nonstop and keeps the children completely engaged.

This session linked perfectly with our current shared focus on sound discrimination and manipulation, which is a key stepping stone for phonics and early literacy. From drumming on knees to creating emergency vehicle sounds 🚓🚑🚒, the children were fully immersed in exploring sound in meaningful ways.
My Happy 🦔s had a fantastic time, and I observed so much learning! They loved pretending to be Chris on the guitar at the end 🥰 🎸
Thank you for another fab session Northern Lights Early Years Stronger Practice Hub : North East and for our much loved Supertato book. 📖 We enjoyed it with a prop once we got home 🥔🦸🏻‍♂️

Ever noticed how spinning an umbrella can be so hard to resist? ☂️
Would you describe it as soothing, calming, satisfying… or something else?

My Happy 🦔s have been enjoying exploring Japanese parasols lately

There’s actually so much going on with this activity...
Spinning umbrellas/parasols supports the vestibular system👂🏼🧠, helping us feel more regulated and in control. The gentle, predictable movement can be incredibly calming for children, while also building fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination 👐🏻👀

I’ve found it especially interesting that one of my usual ‘swing avoiders’ is one of the keenest parasol spinners. Both are vestibular system activities but this kind of movement is completely self-led, they can start, stop, and adjust it themselves, which may feel much safer than being pushed in a swing.
