This stat stopped me in my tracks, women make up around 70% of design students, yet only about 11% of creative directors are women.

When I started in the 90s, I didn’t see women over 35 in the studios I worked in. Not one. So it’s no wonder a lot of us couldn’t picture what “staying in design” looked like long term.

And the thing is, plenty of women are still designing. They’re in house, freelance, running their own thing, working around life, doing great work. They’re just not always the ones getting moved into the roles with the big titles.

If you’re a woman in design, did you have anyone you could look up to when you were starting out, someone you could actually imagine becoming?

Loved my chat with yesterday for the podcast. Talking about our experiences working in in-house corporate roles, the challenges etc and the turning points that lead to going freelance.

I’ve got my first 10 yeses from guests to come onto my podcast. 🤩 and yesterday recorded my first episode! Now that I’ve finally put the plan in action instead of procrastinating over it. I cannot wait to get the Honest Designer Diaries podcast launched later on this summer ☀️

The job title says graphic designer, but the responsibilities sound like five different roles in one.

Would you apply and ask questions later, or would you see that as a warning sign straight away?

Working out your day rate sounds simple until you actually sit down and try to price it.

Because it’s not just, “how much do I want to earn today?”

It’s your experience, your speed, your overheads, the years you’ve spent learning what you know, the time you’re not getting paid for between client work, the admin, the prep, the emails, the revisions, the software, the tax, the fact you’d quite like to remain a functioning human with heating and food in the fridge.

And then you still end up staring at the number thinking, “is that reasonable or have I lost my mind?”

This is one of those things I wish creatives spoke about more honestly, because so many people are guessing in private and hoping for the best.

If you’re trying to work out your day rate, or you just want to compare notes with other creatives who get it, The Creative Room is now open.

Come and ask in there, we’ll chat it through.

Comment ROOM and I’ll send you the link.

Sometimes you just need a creative pal who understands the delicacies of client communication before you hit send to that email reply 🫣

Some weeks, a good catch-up with fellow creatives can do more for your sanity than another productivity tip ever will. Those Friday chats where you can properly talk through the week, what’s been good, what’s been a pain, and what’s been sitting in your head, are the kind of support more creatives need. That’s a big part of the thinking behind The Creative Room. The waitlist is open.

Day 5 of building a creative community. Having creative pals you can send stuff to, without having to explain the full backstory, is honestly a lifeline. The waitlist for The Creative Room is open.

A lot of what creatives need support with happens in the middle of an ordinary workday. A strange email, feedback that doesn’t quite make sense, a quote you start doubting five minutes after sending it, or one of those niggly situations that sits in your head far longer than it should. That’s why I keep coming back to the need for proper conversation, somewhere to talk through the in-between moments that are very real, very common, and still deserve somewhere useful to go. If that sounds like the kind of space you’d want around you, join the waitlist for The Creative Room.

I think loads of creatives sit on questions for far too long because they feel like they should know the answer by now.

How to price it, how to reply, how to handle awkward feedback, how to know if they’re overthinking or if something actually feels off.

That’s a big part of why I’m creating The Creative Room, a space where creatives can ask the real questions, talk things through, and stop carrying every little thing on their own.
