Starting the day with a bit of sea buckthorn sunshine. Simple Smoothie of some mango, one clementine, squeeze of lime, sprinkle of turmeric, bit of grated ginger and a handful of sea buckthorn berries all whizzed up with a little water.

Blending the whole berry is the best way to make the most of the goodness in the berry and the seed.

I now feel ready to take on the day.

Sea Buckthorn is fantastic in dressings and dipping sauces. A few berries can add a great fruity citrusy flavour.

We had this dipping sauce last night with some homemade gyoza was absolutely delicious.

Simply made with chopped chilli, spring onion and ginger, 1/2 tsp of sugar, 1 tbsp rice wine vinegar, a little drizzle of toasted sesame oil, 1/2 tbsp mirin, a little scattering of sea buckthorn berries and a few precious leaves of Vietnamese coriander, this could definitely be replaced with coriander though, I am just enjoying using my new exciting herb in the greenhouse.) once the sea buckthorn berries have defrosted I have them a squeeze to release all that flavour.

Sea buckthorn berries are also fantastic used like this in a vinaigrette, I love it with a cider vinegar and honey one. Lots of other ideas on our grid.

A sea buckthorn and nasturtium chimichurri from last night’s delicious bbq supper. Making the most of the beautiful evenings we are having at the moment.

This was made really simply with some cumin and coriander ground up then some garlic, salt and a bit of sugar, some vinegar, olive oil and then lots of freshly chopped parsley, oregano and lots of peppery nasturtium leaves from my poor plants that are succumbing to the cabbage white caterpillars. It’s then time to add the sea buckthorn berries and a few nasturtium petals too. This sauce is a real flavour punch and can be drizzled over steak, chicken, halloumi, vegetables whatever you fancy really. We had ours with some bbqed lamb steaks, lovely charred aubergines and some vegetable skewers.

Definitely recommend this is one to try if you are enjoying this glorious September weather.

We have been very busy harvesting the first of our sea buckthorn varieties in Mrs Martin’s Meadow. The weather has been so different this year the berries have reached their peak 3 weeks later than expected.

This variety is Sirola it’s a very dark orange colour almost red with really big berries. It’s incredible vibrant colour and wonderful rounded fruity flavour makes it perfect for sorbets and puds.

Next week we hope the Habego variety will be ready. One of my favourites. Can’t wait.

Sea buckthorn works so well in a salad, especially with fish too.
We went to Mersea Island for the day and came back with 2 delicious fresh mackerel and a handful of foraged sea vegetables.

This salad was made really quickly with some incredible home grown kohlrabi, and beetroot shaved nice and thin, some pan fried foraged sea vegetables, some segments of orange, chopped parsley, pumpkin seeds and of course a scattering of our berries. All doused in a really sour and fruity sea buckthorn and honey dressing.

We had the salad with some very simple bbq mackerel.

Sea buckthorn hot cross buns. I love Easter baking and nothing beats the smell of a freshly baked hot cross buns, a tradition I try to hold every Good Friday. Alongside the traditional dried fruit and spices these are studded with dried sea buckthorn berries, pre soaked in a little warm water before adding to the dough. I always make my soy the night before then it is just a quick, divide, roll and pop on a cross, before baking and eating fresh out of the oven.

Dried sea buckthorn berries are available from our website and are delicious in all sorts of delicious cakes and bakes.

Sea buckthorn and wasabi for supper tonight alongside some delicious sweet and salty Yakiton (pork skewers).

This time two years ago we planted a wasabi plant from we have been so desperate to try it with our sea buckthorn, but have waited patiently, occasionally treating ourselves to some of the leaves and flowers which are also edible. The waiting was over and today we harvested our first tuber. It is so amazing it doesn’t have the harshness of horseradish it is fruity and zingy and most important is amazing with our sea buckthorn.

Tonight we simply grated some of the fresh wasabi and added to it about 10 sea buckthorn berries, a tsp of mirin and a splash of soy. I cannot wait to try this with sushi, it was so delicious with the pork and just with a little rice or the vegetables. It lifted the dish to something exciting. Looking forward to trying some new combinations, perhaps with white chocolate next time?

It is definitely feeling like soup weather at the moment. I love sea buckthorn and squash. This spiced smoky squash and parsnip soup was so easy and delicious. Whilst we had the fire on Tuesday we popped a whole crown prince squash, two onions and some parsnips into the embers to gently roast. They came out all soft and unctuous. All the flesh was scooped out and whizzed up with some smoked paprika, onion seeds, cumin, coriander and sea buckthorn powder. The soup was served with a dollop of the feta from yesterday’s post, some crispy sage leaves, a few toasted seeds and a few sea buckthorn berries of course. Lovely warming lunch.
