On Thursday 21st May the Members of Bake Natter and Roll were Busy Bees at their meeting in the Small Hall at the Spire Church when we were entertained by the amazing Juliet Evans from The Hive Helpers Project of Farnham as she raised our awareness about Bees, these important little creatures.

Juliet’s daughter Erica started Hive Helpers in 2021 and they have become very involved with Farnham Community Farm. Juliet told us that in the UK we only have one type of honey bee but there are various different types of bumble bees and solitary bees. Bees are very, very important pollinators and they need habitat to forage and this sadly is being depleted, the solitary bees like to be close to their homes.

Juliet took us through the life cycle of bees; how they pollinate; other insects that also pollinate; she also told us that some of the bees' favourite plants are ones that we might be class as weeds such as dandelions and toad flax. Debbie one of our members dressed up in the full beekeeping kit.

In Farnham we have the wonderful Bee Safari Leaflet (available from the Farnham Council Offices) and one of the most popular places for bees is the Library.

Staying on the bee theme, our wonderful cake bakers of Melisa and Bobbie created delicious bakes that had honey as one of the ingredients or decorated with bees.

After the presentation by Juliet the general news of Bake Natter and Roll was discussed, such as the Curry Club, Book Group, Theatre Group, Walks available with the Farnham Walking Festival and the forthcoming guided walk around Brookwood Cemetery.

On Thursday 18th June BNR will be having a Members Only get together at the Ceramics Cafe. The next full meeting will be on Thursday 16th July which will start at 7.45pm and will be in the Small Hall at the Spire Church, South Street, Farnham. The Members of Bake Natter and Roll on Thursday 16th April proved how artistic they are when they met at the Small Hall at the Spire Church for a “Craft Evening” of painting stones.

It was a wonderful evening to relax and be inspired, painting pre-primed stones of various sizes with acrylic paints. It was a great opportunity to chat and catch up with fellow members all the while eating cake and drinking tea. The delicious cakes were provided by Gail and Debi. Not only was it a craft evening, but it was also a mindful evening.

While the members painted they were updated about various BNR events and activities that would be coming up in the future such as the Curry Club, the Theatre Group, a possible guided tour to Brookwood Cemetery, plus walks that BNR are getting involved in during the Farnham Walking Festival.

The assembled members voted for the BNR charity for 2026/27, which will be Change of Scene, a local charity that offers animal-assisted outdoor learning for young people with complex emotional, social and behavioural needs who have recently relocated to Frensham.

The next meeting is on Thursday 21st May when we will be having a visit from Juliet Evans from Hive Helpers. The meeting will start at 7.45pm and will be in the Small Hall at the Spire Church, South Street, Farnham. It was a glorious (if initially cold) Sunday morning that Bake Natter and Roll Farnham WI set up our cake stall at the Farmers' Market in the Central Car Park.

The wonderful team of Gill A and Barbara had created some delicious bakes, and Gill along with Helen, joined Jenny in selling the amazing homemade cakes.

Throughout the morning we met some lovely shoppers; one lovely lady even showed me how to make the card machine work (Helen has taken a picture of me showing off with the machine). We had lots of laughs and chats, and the morning went really quickly.

Many thanks to Dave of Farnham Council who set up the gazebo and helped with all the other bits and bobs we needed, and to all the lovely people who purchased beverages and cakes from us.

The Evening of Thursday 19th March the team of Bake Natter and Roll were back in their usual location of the Small Hall at the Spire Church and we had a really interesting talk given to us about Dementia from a very inspirational speaker Lauren Fridge from “Home Instead”.

Lauren gave us some really fascinating facts, such as there are at present about 982,000 people living with dementia and this is projected to rise to 1.4 million in 2040 also that one in two of us will be affected by dementia in our lifetimes. She gave us a list of symptoms of dementia, which includes problems with memory, thinking, problem solving, language and perception and how these if bad enough will affect daily life.

She enlightened us that the causes of dementia, which are a mixture of risk factors, some of which like our age and genes we can do nothing about but there are some risks such as smoking, and alcohol we can stop plus taking care of our selves mentally and managing our blood pressure, cholesterol, taking care of our eyes and hearing, all of which can help to reduce risks.

She discussed certain types of dementia besides Alzheimer's, and things we can do some of which are very simple, that can help to make those living with dementia feel they are still in control.

It was a very illuminating presentation and our discussion afterwards with Lauren was very useful.

After her presentation, the members refuelled on delicious cakes and bakes created by Gill A and Katie, we went through the day to day business of Bake Natter and Roll such as the forth coming visit to Mill Studio at Guildford, the recent Melange Quiz (where we raised £106.00 for Prostate Cancer) the Book Group Meeting, and other events that BNR are involved in.

The next meeting is on Thursday 16th April when we will be having a Craft Night rock painting. The meeting will start at 7.45pm and will be in the Small Hall at the Spire Church, South Street, Farnham. The evening of Friday 13th March was a night for Laughs, chat, good company and lovely food accompanied by a Bake Natter and Roll "Melange Quiz".

Friends, families and partners come along to the Hale Community Centre for a quiz, the questions of which were devised by the Committee Members of BNR, Sue gave us questions about Animals in Literature, Gail's were France, Debi's related to General Knowledge, Jeanie chose TV and Films and Ailsa questioned the teams on Animals. Jenny's questions were obscure pictures of places in a small section of Farnham Craft Town, which, out of all the questions, were the most difficult.

At half-time, the quizzers enjoyed a choice of homemade Cottage Pie or Allotment Pie which was followed by the most amazing puddings created by Gill A and Gill R.

As you would expect with a BNR get together there was the infamous Wrapped Raffle, which raised a marvellous amount of £106.00 for Prostate Cancer.

So a huge thank you to all the Quizzers for making the evening such fun, to the BNR Committee of Sue, Gail, Ailsa, Jeanie and Debi, Hale Community Centre plus the wonderful Gill's - A&R, and all the many hands who helped at the end of the evening with the washing up and tidying up the hall.

Sunday 22nd was a busy afternoon for the Cake Team of Bake Natter and Roll consisting of Helen, Gill, Gillian, Jenny, Katie and our biggest supporter Ted, when we set up our Cake stall at Music in the Vine Church.

We were entertained by The Why Band, who were great. We sang along to the songs while we served our delicious bakes – Gill's Lemon Cake and Gillian’s Banana Cake were a real wow with the audience, and Katie’s savoury Cheese Scones were amazing.

Thank you to Oli and all the team from Farnham Council, The Why Band for their great music and all the lovely audience who purchased cakes and beverages from us and made the afternoon such fun.

The members of Bake Natter and Roll Farnham WI entered the world of Crime Scene Investigation at their Meeting on Thursday 19th February, when the guest speaker was Hayley Scott a former Forensic Practitioner working with the Metropolitan Police.

Hayley took us through the wide range of crime scenes she has attended in her 14 years working with the Met. During her investigations her evidence has been used to catch 12 murderers. She took us through the way careful identification, retrieval and interpretation of forensic evidence which includes fingerprints, finger marks, DNA etc are all required to prove a case and she would, if necessary, go to Court to give her evidence. We were surprised to learn that there are 9 fingerprint patterns and that fingerprints are unique – even identical twins have unique prints – and that some people don’t have fingerprints.

After Hayley’s presentation and the members refuelling on the delicious cakes and bakes created by Arlette and Jules we discussed Bake Natter and Roll “business” with updates from Gail about the Curry Club and Ali about the Book Group. We also chatted about the formation of a Theatre Group with Katie as the lead, and this looks as if it will be a very popular Group.

The next meeting is on Thursday 19th March when we will be discussing with Lauren Fridge how to spot signs of dementia. The meeting will start at 7.45pm and will be in the Large Hall at the Spire Church, South Street, Farnham. The members of Bake Natter and Roll Farnham WI were on Party Mode as they were celebrating their 10th Birthday at the Meeting on Thursday 15th January. We started the evenings meeting with chat, tea and cake, the delicious cakes were created by Karin and Lorraine.
This was followed by a presentation from Anna a representative from Step by Step a local charity which is based in Aldershot by covers 6 counties. The charity has been around for nearly 40 years and they have been doing their bit to prevent youth homelessness. They help children from the ages of 11 to 25 to find safe places to live and also giving them support. In 2025 they assisted 1500 young people, the average age of the young people they helped was 16 and half. As well as assisting with places to live they also help with Mental Health issues and giving support with training and life skills. The charity costs 4 million pounds per year to run. More information about the work of Step by Step can be found on their web site: stepbystep.org
To celebrate Bake Natter and Rolls’ 10th Birthday all the members were given a party bag containing lots of goodies, plus one of team, Melissa had made a magnificent Birthday Cake, the cutting of the cake was done by Carole the Surrey WI Advisor. We also sang with gusto Happy Birthday to ourselves and ended the evening with a merry game of Parce the Parcel.

It was a Hula Hooping Workshop night at the last 2025 Bake Natter and Roll Farnham WI Meeting on Thursday 18th.

The team were delighted with the wonderful cakes and bakes that had been created by Fliss and Hilary and prepared themselves to work the calories off hula hooping.

After the members had been updated by Jenny about forthcoming events and activities, such as the Book Club Meeting in January; Curry Club in February and the Melange Quiz in March, they moved on to the important activity of the evening when the wonderful Tracey took us through how to Hula Hoop.

There was a great deal of laughing and giggling regarding the members attempts, some of the gathering really were very good and were able to keep the hoop going round and round. Others were not so dextrous but still had great fun. For the finale to the our attempts Tracey took us through a Hula Hooping routine which turned out to be very effective.

The members kindly presented Jenny with some truly lovely Christmas Presents - luckily she did not cry.

We closed the evening with the wrapped Christmas Raffle and the pulling of crackers. Best wishes for Christmas and New Year were given to all and a reminder about the next meeting on Thursday 15th January when it will be Party Night as Bake Natter and Roll will be 10 years old. The January meeting starts at 7.45pm in the Small Hall at the Spire Church, South Street, Farnham. For more information please visit our website farnhamwibakenatterandroll or email [email protected]
