The Jo Harper Cake Company

The Jo Harper Cake Company Timeless, elegant wedding cake designer specialising in bespoke cakes with handmade sugar flowers.

I can help you design your own cake or you can choose from my portfolio. To me taste is just as important as style - my cakes are a feast for the eyes as well as the palate. They are delicious, irresistible and come in a variety of sizes, flavours and fillings. Most of the decorations are made out of sugarpaste and therefore can be kept if you don't eat them.

The truth.
Guests absolutely do eat wedding cake when it’s served in a way that’s easy (and tempting!) for them to enjoy.

Here are my three golden rules:
Don’t cut it too late
If your cake isn’t cut until the evening, many guests will already be on the dance floor or heading home.
One of my favourite alternatives is what the Dutch call “cake and cocktails”, serving your wedding cake during the drinks reception, shortly after the ceremony. Guests are happily mingling, and the cake becomes part of the celebration rather than an afterthought.

Make it obvious
The most dedicated cake lovers will go searching for cake. Everyone else won’t.
Once the cake has been cut, ask your venue to display it in a high-traffic area where guests naturally pass by. If people can see it, they’ll take it.

Offer some variety
Not everyone loves lemon, and not everyone loves chocolate.
Having a different flavour in each tier gives guests a choice and dramatically increases the chances that there’s something they’ll enjoy.
Because when guests have options, they’re much more likely to say yes to a slice.

Most of the time, it simply comes down to when, where, and what’s being served.

Which of these tips would make the biggest difference at your wedding?

One of the biggest misconceptions about wedding cakes is that the cake cutting HAS to happen in the evening.

But some of my favourite moments actually happen much earlier in the day. And often feel far more relaxed and enjoyable because of it.

During your drinks reception.
The light is usually beautiful, creating a lovely shared moment before dinner.

Straight after your wedding breakfast entrance.
Everyone is already standing and paying attention, which makes the whole moment feel really seamless and energetic.

During cocktail hour at golden hour.
If your venue allows the cake to be moved outside, this can feel incredibly romantic, with soft evening light, cocktails flowing, and the dreamiest photos.

Traditions are lovely, but your wedding timeline should work for YOU.

Golden hour and one very resilient wedding cake...

Helen & Luke dreamed of cutting their wedding cake outside, in the golden hour’s glow, even though their wedding fell during a heatwave.

As a wedding cake designer, I’ll admit… I was ever so slightly nervous. Heat and cake don’t make the best of friends.

To make sure the cake remained in perfect condition, I delivered it earlier in the day, set it up safely in an air-conditioned room, and the team at the venue kindly kept a close eye on it until the moment arrived.

And honestly? I’m so glad we trusted the process.

Just take a look at these photos! The fun, the laughter and joy captured forever.

When couples pause to enjoy the moment together, the cake cutting becomes so much more than just another tradition on the timeline.

It’s a memory they’ll treasure forever.

Choose a statement backdrop.
A beautiful backdrop instantly makes your cake feel intentional and styled.
Think: exposed brick, floral arches, mirrors, fireplaces, large windows with natural light.

Add florals around the base.
A few carefully placed flowers can make your cake feel connected to the rest of your wedding styling.
Use blooms that match your bouquets or centrepieces for a cohesive look.

Style your cake display like part of the décor.
Your cake shouldn’t feel separate from the rest of your wedding.
Repeating styling details: colours, candles, florals, textures, creates a seamless, curated look.
