The truth.
Guests absolutely do eat wedding cake when it’s served in a way that’s easy (and tempting!) for them to enjoy.
Here are my three golden rules:
Don’t cut it too late
If your cake isn’t cut until the evening, many guests will already be on the dance floor or heading home.
One of my favourite alternatives is what the Dutch call “cake and cocktails”, serving your wedding cake during the drinks reception, shortly after the ceremony. Guests are happily mingling, and the cake becomes part of the celebration rather than an afterthought.
Make it obvious
The most dedicated cake lovers will go searching for cake. Everyone else won’t.
Once the cake has been cut, ask your venue to display it in a high-traffic area where guests naturally pass by. If people can see it, they’ll take it.
Offer some variety
Not everyone loves lemon, and not everyone loves chocolate.
Having a different flavour in each tier gives guests a choice and dramatically increases the chances that there’s something they’ll enjoy.
Because when guests have options, they’re much more likely to say yes to a slice.
Most of the time, it simply comes down to when, where, and what’s being served.
Which of these tips would make the biggest difference at your wedding?
