6 things I will never do as a biscuit artist..... details below!
1. Directly copy another person’s work - Copying with credit is often ok, but I would rather take inspiration from another artist’s work and put my own spin on it than copy directly. I do appreciate inspo pics from customers though – it’s always good to make sure we’re on the same page!
2. Reproduce copyrighted designs – OK, firstly - this is illegal. I don’t want to get sued. Secondly, refer to my previous comment – I don’t like copying. And to be honest, the pressure of replicating a Disney character is not for me! Again, I’m happy to use a theme as inspo – Disney princesses for example, or colour schemes.
3. Use parchment for rolling dough – I love my silicone mats! I have them set up to give me the exact thickness I like for my dough, and I have perforated ones for baking that help reduce spread. The only thing I could do without is the washing up at the end of the day!
4. Buying lots of new cutters – I do love a new cutter, and there are so many fun designs out there, but they can be expensive and often unnecessary! You can create any design on top of a simple shape, or get creative with the shapes you have, my most used shapes are my plaques, my hexagon and my oval.
5. Buy an airbrush – I’ve just never seen the point in them. Yes, they can give great effects but they just seem to add extra work and expense. I am saving up for an edible printer though – printing directly onto icing, yes please!
6. Supermarket food colouring – it is TERRIBLE, and expensive for what it is. I buy all my food colours online (I usually use Colour Splash or Pro Gel), they are relatively inexpensive and last for ages. Most importantly, they easily give you the colour that you are looking for. With supermarket colouring, you could use a whole tub of red and it would still be pink!
What do you think? Am I right? Or do you disagree?
