Morning my lovelies! 💛

We're back at the gorgeous Manor House Hotel in West Auckland today with Gather North, and we're here until 2pm! 👋

We've brought along a cabinet full of vegan and gluten-free goodies, including our marbled banana bread 🍌🍰

There are lots of lovely independent traders here too, so if you fancy a little Sunday wander, come and say hello, pick up something delicious and have a mooch around!

Markets are a ridiculous amount of work. And after a few quieter ones recently, every sensible part of me knows I should probably be questioning why I keep doing them.

But I just can't let them go. 💛

I've been trading at Norton Green Market for almost as long as I've had this business. I love seeing familiar customers, catching up with my trader friends and getting out of the Market Hall for a day.

And there's that little burst of joy when somebody comes back specifically because they want something I make. I'm pretty sure one of my regulars based their university choice on knowing my shop lives in Durham. 🙈

So today we're finishing caramel shortbread, spooky rocky road and Persian Love Cake, then moving onto banana bread, Bakewell tart and whatever else I decide I've got time for. 😂

Because apparently one market wasn't enough...

Pistachio Buns are back! 💚

They’re making a ✨special✨ appearance on the counter this Saturday — sticky pistachio buns, pistachio glaze and a generous handful of roasted pistachios on top 👌

Erm... I might have a little bit of explaining to do. 👀😂

There are some rather exciting things happening behind the scenes at The Nook at the minute. More on all of this very soon...

But first — I need a joiner! 🪚

Do we have any joiners, carpenters or builders amongst our lovely Nook customers/followers? Or someone local you'd wholeheartedly recommend?

I'm looking for a few people to quote for some work over the next month or so, including fitting kitchen units (potentially some second-hand ones because REUSE 🙌), putting up partition walls, and building/cladding a front counter.

I've got photos and rough plans at the minute, with proper drawings from the kitchen company coming very soon.

If this is your sort of thing — or you know somebody brilliant — tag them, send them this post or drop me a message.

⚗️ Trial Bakes 🧪

We’re currently developing a couple of new autumn bakes and, rather than sitting in the kitchen eating them all ourselves and trying to decide what needs changing, we thought we’d let you lot do some of the work 😂

We’re starting with our maple pecan slice — and there will be a few different trial versions appearing over the next little while.

Trial bake slices will be £4.50 each, and what we really want is your opinion on them.

Not just “it’s nice” (although obviously we’ll happily accept that 😂) — we want to know what would elevate it. What would make it what you want?

Too sweet? Not sweet enough? More pecans? Different texture? More maple? Is the base right? Is there something missing that would make you go ooooh?

And once we’ve finished messing about with the pecan slice, we’ll be doing the same with Crumble Jack.

Basically, you’re getting to eat the development work while we figure out how to make it bloody good. 🤷‍♀️

SNACK RACK RESTOCK 🍫

I've just done a big restock of all the random vegan and gluten-free goodies that I get ridiculously excited about and then force everyone else to try 😅

If you've not spotted it before, the snack rack is basically home to all the stuff that's either hard to find locally or that I stumbled across and immediately thought, "Right, we need this in The Nook."

New/restocked bits include:

🍫 Ombar snack bars...We've got the Pistachio Cream and Peanut Butter Oat M!lk flavours back in.

🥜 Pip & Nut peanut butter cups and protein bars are fully topped up again.

🐣 Chicky Eggs are back, this time in packets.

🍪 NEW IN - Stroop Club vegan + gluten-free stroopwafels.
..I'm literally eating a stroopwafel while writing this and it's exactly what a stroopwafel should be. Proper chewy caramel middle. Absolutely no notes.

Also...

🍫 The Otherly chocolate range is fully stocked again too, including Birthday Cake, Salted Caramel and Sea Salt.

☕ Dandies mini marshmallows are still here for anyone wanting to take their Higgy hot chocolate to the next level.

🥤 Drinks have had a restock too: • Counter Culture kombucha • Grass & Co nootropic drinks • Glass bottles of still and sparkling water

Honestly, the hardest part of stocking the snack rack is not eating half of it before it reaches the shelf.

Nobody talks about this side of running a bakery.

Not the cakes. Not the markets. Not the pretty photos.

Just eight aprons emerging from a wash cycle having somehow formed a single, sentient textile organism.

For the record, they all went in tied individually.

They untied themselves, ignored my efforts entirely, and have re-emerged as one giant apron-based friendship bracelet.

30 minutes of untangling ahead. 🫠
