We would like to respectfully mark the passing of Dumfries & Galloway's First Female Police Constable, Mrs Catherine Campbell (nee Black).
Constable Catherine Black was Dumfries and Galloway Constabulary's 1st Female Police officer; she joined on 27th July 1956 and was stationed at Stranraer.
Constable Black served for around 4.5 years but had to resign when she married and became Mrs Campbell.
Mrs Campbell went on to train and practice as a clinical psychologist but remained proud to have served as a Police Constable.
Mrs Campbell had fond memories of her time as a Constable; she would recite her shoulder number whenever she drove into Galloway Division and always cherished her Police issue whistle, which she has now passed on to her grandson.
Our thoughts are with her family at this time.
Thank you for pioneering Women in Policing.
