Another day, another cake exhibit. Today we are heading to....

St. Winnold's Fair

Thousands of people, and horses, used to flock to Downham Market for the St. Winnold's Fair every March 3. It was one of the biggest horse sales in Europe, at it's height more than 10,000 horses were bought and sold during each fair. The sale always began on March 3, or St. Winnold's day, and the festivities, originally held in fields between the village of Boughton and Wereham, later moving to Downham in the early 1800s, became known as St.Winnolds Fair. The event is still remembered to this day in a procession through the town.

Today's exhibit has a royal connection....

Charles I

It is true our region is now stranger to a royal visit, but none quite compare to the one that bought a fugitive Charles I to Downham Market. On May Day in 1646, King Charles I came to Downham Market to hide after the Battle of Naseby where he reportedly hid in an inn located on the High Street. He disguised himself as a clergyman in a bid to avoid being captured by Parliamentary forces, his prospect were bleak and his options running out. Sadly for him, his stay in our town did not bring about a change in fortunes, only a transformation in his appearance, where he is said to have had his hair cut and to have bought a new hat.

The Market

Downham Market is one of the oldest Market towns in Norfolk, with its origins going all the way back to the Dark Ages. The town achieved its Market status in 1046 from Edward The Confessor and continues to thrive today, nearly a thousand years later.

Today the edible museum tour takes us to....

Paradise road

Paradise Road is ironically named because it was the site of the town gallows, located near the historic St Edmund's Church, during the medieval period. It was historically referred to as the "road to paradise" because condemned criminals were said to be as close to heaven as they would get on their way to ex*****on.

Day 2 and our edible museum tour takes us to one of Downham Market's most recognisable features...

Downham, the Gingerbread Town!

Downham Market is famously known as the Gingerbread Town due to the local carrstone used in its architecture. This stone, which is sedimentary sandstone formed in the cretaceous period, varies in colour from light to dark rusty ginger, depending on the amount of iron oxide present. The distinctive appearance of the stone resembles freshly baked gingerbread, which is why Downham Market earned this nickname. The use of carrstone in the town's buildings is a testament to its rich history and architectural heritage.

So, let's start at the beginning...

Why Downham Market?

Downham Market's name derives from the Anglo-Saxon words dūn ("hill") and hām ("homestead"), meaning a settlement on a hill, strategically positioned above the surrounding Fens to avoid flooding and provide visibility over the landscape. Archaeological evidence indicates human activity in the area from Neolithic and Bronze Age periods, with early settlers exploiting the elevated terrain for habitation and resource gathering.

Wednesday morning we had a fantastic time at the Mayor’s Coffee Morning cutting this year’s Downham Market Festival cake!

This year’s theme, “Downham Through the Decades”, was brought to life as an edible museum, with each cake exhibit celebrating a piece of our town’s history, heritage, and community spirit.

For anyone who missed it, we’ll be sharing one cake exhibit each day over the next 12 days, along with the story and information that accompanied it at the exhibition.

We’d love to hear your memories along the way, so please do share your stories, photos, and favourite moments from Downham through the years in the comments.
