Ryan's Cookie Box

Ryan's Cookie Box Taking Over The World One Cookie At A Time Welcome to Ryan's Cookie Box! It is managed by a young man called Ryan, who just happens to have Down Syndrome. Enjoy! X
(235)

It does exactly what it says on the tin - a Not For Profit Charity Honesty box at the top of our driveway, selling home made cookies and bakes. He is ably supported by the Cookie Box Team - his assistant Baker, his assistant Baker's Husband, Smelly Big Brother David, Big Sister Gym Bunny Nicki, Big Sister Writer in Residence Laura and Elder Statesman Grampa. We bake most days according to work and

family commitments, and make whatever takes our fancy, although we do have a few staples - Chocolate Chip Cookies, Brownies and Chocolate Goop, Lemon Drizzle and White Goop, Endorphin Bars, Gluten Free Carrot Cake....
When a fresh batch is baked and labelled, we put up a post on FB to let you know what we have, and then put up a few packets at a time in the Cookie Box until they are all sold. The way it works is that we ask you to cover the cost of ingredients and packaging, and then add a donation - and when you open the door of The Cookie Box you will find a sheet that explains it all. But by way of a quick explanation, we have a colour coded system - if you look at the label on the packet, there will be a green, yellow or red dot. Bakes with green dots cost £1.10 to make so you cover that AND THEN ADD A DONATION. Bakes with yellow dots cost £1.30 to make so you cover that AND THEN ADD A DONATION. Bakes with red dots cost £1.50 to make so you cover that AND THEN ADD A DONATION. And to give you a wee steer, on average, each packet takes 15 minutes to make. All the donations go to the Charity of The Month - and the name of the charity will be on the packet. And to date, over the 5 (almost 6) years that Ryan has been running his Cookie Box, he has raised over £50,000 for charity. The Cookie Box itself is a little on the quirky side, and we revamp it every few weeks, so it always has some daft old theme - which gives us a bit of fun. And last year we put together a flat pack beehive, called 'Ryan's Jam Jar Open Here', and it stocks home made jellies and chutneys - mostly made from the apples which we are so kindly donated from far and near. The page records all the details of where your hard earned cash goes. It is also full of Tosh and Twaddle - so if you have nothing better to do, or are having a lengthy session on the throne, you can read about The Big House, Hedgehogs, Jummy C the Squirrel, Squealer the Cat and the assistant baker's wandering ruminations. Don't say we didn't warn you! And thank you for dropping by - virtually or otherwise. Oh - and you might like to know where we are, and how to get here:

Our address is 100A Drumnaconagher Rd, Crossgar, Downpatrick, BT30 9JJ

And your best and easiest way to come is from Ballynahinch, so-

Coming in to Ballynahinch from the Belfast side, take the B7 road to Crossgar. Drive along there for about one and a half miles - you will pass St Colman's School on your left, and you will go over a tight little bend at a bridge. If you keep going, the road goes into a long, left handed, uphill bend, and the Drumnaconagher Rd is on that bend on the right hand side. We are half a mile down on the right - the sign is on the roadside, and the Cookie Box just through the gate. Look forward to seeing you!

My absolute favourite memories of Killyleagh are all about our trips to Picnic, as it was then, for breakfast.
Especially on those cold, wet, windy, overcast, autumn and winter mornings, when the warmth hit you the moment you opened the door, and we would sit amongst all the quirk and fun that only Kath could bring, listening to the craic and banter from their very special staff.

And we would sit looking out, with a bowl of chai porridge with rhubarb compote and a double espresso for me, and a cheese and Serrano ham croissant with Ballymaloe (hold the poisonous salad) and a freshly squeezed orange for Ryan.

And when you'd finished, and bought your wee bag of goodies to bring home for tea, you went back out in the cold, but you felt warm inside, and not just because you were full up with a big bowl of porridge (never too hot, never too cold, always just right).

That's the effect of a really good community cafe.

We haven't been back for quite a while, but today we called in for coffee and some takeout deli - and what a pleasure! Picnic was recently relaunched as Forage, and is now owned and run by Chef Roy - and while he has made it very much his own, the vibe and welcome could be Picnic all over again.

Such lovely staff, such a warm welcome- and the food was utterly delicious.

Thank you so much!

I did take a wee search through our Facebook photos, and came across these gems - the last being from 2016!

Tradition has it that the first jar of a honey harvest is given away as a gift, sending along with it the wishes of health, wealth and happiness to the lucky recipient. It's also a way of reflecting and thanking the bees for what they have given us, and creates the hope of plentiful harvests to come.

Yesterday Stevie-down-the Road rocked up with the first jar of the season and gave it to Ryan.....and it is gorgeous.

This morning it was ceremoniously trickled onto his yoghurt, granola and strawberry combo using one of those funny little honey wand things....and devoured.

The science and folklore around the world of honey is facinating.
Definitely a rabbit hole moment.

Thank you to our very own beekeeper, Stevie-down-the-Road and his gang - honey, beautiful free roaming eggs and even some plants if you are lucky, at this honesty box Blue Bungalow , just down the road from us.

Fabulous.

We just spent the most lovely morning at Magherdroll Indoor Car Boot Sale - such a warm and friendly experience, that it just felt like a big hug.

Props to the organisers - so well run.

We went in with 8 big bags of buns, and came out with 2 dozen eggs, 2 clamps, and a ball of multicoloured wool.

Thank you for having us.....nothing left for The Cookie Box I'm afraid, but if we do get a little baking done, we'll put up a post.

We're venturing a little further afield over the summer - just for a couple of things, and because they're to do with family and friends.

So for this weekend, we are heading with our buns to Magheradroll Church Hall (Church Rd, Ballynahinch), to their indoor car boot sale.
It's open from 9am until 12:30 pm - and whatever we don't sell, we'll pop in The Cookie Box when we get back home, with all profits to Marie Curie - Northern Ireland.

And then closed on Sunday.

A Grand Day Out!

And if you are looking for another grand place to go on your Grand Day Out, Cedar Integrated Primary School in Crossgar is having their annual Classic and Vintage Car Show - with BBQ, burgers, balls, bouncy castle and anything else you can think of beginning with B.
£5 per adult at the gate and children free.

It really is that time of year.

Trying out a new recipe this morning, so we have a couple of:

Dead Banana Loaves with an Enlivening Cinnamon Crunch....if you happen to be passing.

And an update on Spider Watch..... a near miss last night, but Aragog lives on, and Ryan has decided that a cheese bait is the answer, to lure him out.......

Meanwhile, Big Sister Laura examined her bedclothes very carefully last night.

Ryan has discovered a very large spider living behind the curtain behind the red chair..... and because he knows that Big Sister Laura is Arachnophobic and he most definitely isn't, he has brought down The Big Red Spider Catcher to contain the beast.

Six failed attempts so far today, but the enthusiasm and attention to the correct protocol has not dimmed....

Whether he is planning to save Laura from her worst fears, or hoping to tuck the spider under her duvet for a late night discovery.....who knows.

But I know what I'd put my money on.

We'll keep you updated.

Baker's Perks this morning with a cinnamon bun for breakfast.

We're open today while the remaining stock lasts - mostly little tubs of brownie bites with goop (regular and NGCI) - good to warm up in the microwave, and cool down with icecream.

Also a few lemon drizzle tubs, and the last few Cobana Bites plus a couple of other bits and pieces.

We found some dead bananas at the bottom of the fruit bowl this morning - so banana bread it is then.....

It's not the golden hour yet, but the lighting is very beautiful after a busy, and rather warm and sticky day.

Thank you to everybody who called - I think we lost track of just how much baking we had done, but we have finally reached the bottoms of all the Bags for Lives, and all the remaining stock is in The Cookie Box.
We'll stay open until dark this evening if you are passing.

All profits to Marie Curie - Northern Ireland.

Thank you!
