"Sponge cake, roadworks, and a very British queue"
As we all make the most of the bank holiday, we just wanted to take a few moments to reflect on things since we opened.
Busy busy busy is an understatement! The demand, support and encouragement we have received has been truly phenomenal. As we closed the doors on a Saturday, we were left completely exhausted after working consecutive 14 hour shifts from Wednesday onwards, but also genuinely elated as we recalled some of the compliments we have received as we went along. Whether that was someone complimenting Magda's breads and pastries, or my cakes and cheesecakes, it really makes a difference for us and keeps us motivated to produce the finest baked goods!
It was quieter during the week because of the roadworks, and we can only hope that the powers that be in Powys council take note and address, as the impact on trade during the week was noticeable not just for ourselves, but other traders too. Crickhowell was very quiet during the week, so, please please please keep supporting all us little independents during the week and making the effort to come into town regardless of the traffic, as it really does make a difference🙏 That said, we have been made aware of a local cause at the Crickhowell library on a Friday which we will be happy to donate to if there is anything unsold from the day previous. :)
As Saturday rolled around, the traffic lights were removed, and wow, we could feel the difference immediately! Crickhowell was bustling again, and we can only apologise for the queues getting into the bakery! 🫣😮💨 But for those that persevered - a massive thank you! As I serve people, I might be dashing from one bread counter to the next to fill people's orders, but I'm always listening, and I heard some lovely exchanges from people who had been queuing. "It was lovely to meet you and be able to chat" was an exchange I heard from one of our customers as they said goodbye to the person behind them, and that is really a common exchange. It is absolutely lovely to see where people have been queuing that it has turned into a hub of social activity, with new friendships being formed as people wait to be served, or as they marvel together hypnotised by the therapeutic nature of watching Magda kneed and shape her dough.
We have met some lovely people, and we try to chat to as many people as possible when it is quieter, but we are always amazed when people come in and tell us that word about our little bakery has spread as far afield as New Zealand, South Africa, Norway, and other countries around the world! Some people have been to France and made a number of comments that Magda's pastries are easily as good, and when I see her face light up in response to that, I always admire at how modest she is in receiving that comment 🥰, whereas with me, my head would honestly not fit through the door! 😂 Look out for more of her creations as she tries out some different ideas, hopefully in readiness to enter a competition or two in the future 👀
As Saturday was coming to a close, a customer we had met a few weeks previously - Charlie- came through the doors carrying a couple of cakes for us, which I have attached as part of the post. His words really touched us- "you bake so much for us, I wanted to bake something for you" ❤️ So as we ended the day, we enjoyed some truly lovely sponge cake courtesy of Charlie, and even then we had customers walking through the door, seeing the cakes, and asking if they were for sale! 😅 It was a lovely gesture and I will be sure to bake something now for Charlie in return!
In other news, we have restocked our pantry with the Ty'r Gobaith chutneys and jellies. They have been hugely popular, and we are so happy to have received some more as they are absolutely delicious! We are also exploring local collabs so look out for more info on that soon 👀
Just a quick reminder, we are closed the week beginning 11th May but will be back the following week feeling hopefully refreshed and ready to bake!
Enjoy the rest of your bank holiday ❤️
