It is with a heavy heart that I have taken the decision to shut the doors on Colne Cakes 'n' Bakes. I will of course honour any existing bookings, but I won't be taking on any new orders.
I've decided to do this due to a number of factors, in the main due to unreasonable clients. I've had a few clients who have managed to destroy my cakes either in transit or being careless when handling, with the expectation that I then reconstruct at my own expense and time. What these clients seem to forget is that I'm not a conglomerate, I'm a small home baker, and I do it because I love it, so their disregard for my work is heart-breaking. After literally hours and hours worth of work, and then for them to deny mis-handling and destroy my work, is atrocious. I, in most cases, offer to reconstruct for no charge, and so have left myself out of pocket, because I want to offer a standard of customer service. In some cases I have even refunded due to abusive clients.
A cake, depending on the detail, costs on average £15-£20 for the material (cake ingredients, fondant, butter, icing sugar, cake board, dowels, nonpareils, food colouring, cake box, toppers, electric, fuel, etc.). If I then work on that said cake for 10 hours and I've charged £75, it means my time is worth £5.50 an hour, to then have to do all that work again is a kick in the gut. I bake cakes because I love it, and I don't want to feel sick each time one is picked up, not knowing whether or not it's going to be destroyed and I get that soul-destroying text. I'm not going to lie, it is the minority of clients, but it's really not worth that gut wrenching feeling.
I also work full time in another job and have a young family. I'd rather give my time to them than some ungrateful customer who thinks their mistake is worth more than any of the above.
I want to thank everyone for their support and custom since I started, for the most, I've absolutely loved doing it and meeting so many lovely people! Everyone
