6 years of Munro Bakes! Happy Birthday to us! 🥳
I always find the anniversary of my business so very bittersweet.
2020 was the year that my husband and I were due to get married. We got engaged in October 2018 and set a date for 20th June 2020; we loved the numbers! We also wanted a summer wedding. Like many other couples, we had planned 99% of our wedding by March and had paid deposits to several suppliers. Unfortunately, we were one of those unlucky couples whose wedding was cancelled, and we lost many of our suppliers as they couldn't keep their businesses afloat. Our baker was one of them.
(If you haven't yet purchased wedding insurance, you NEED to do it now! We were so lucky that we did, all thanks to my sister-in-law, who told us how important it was. I'd never even heard of it before 🙏).
We rescheduled our wedding to 2021, but restrictions were still in place, meaning we couldn't have all of our immediate family there, so we pushed it back again to 2023 and had our son in the meantime.
I struggled to find a baker like our original one. We paid a deposit to another local baker whose work looked gorgeous, but we didn't really enjoy the samples. I'd always loved baking as a child, but I'd never decorated a cake and hadn't the foggiest idea where to start! I jokingly said to my husband that perhaps I could make our wedding cake if I learned how to decorate. I wasn't serious in the slightest, but being the supportive husband he is, he simply said, "Why don't you?"
Anyone who knows me knows I love a challenge,and I'm not very good at giving up 😂.
During lockdown, I spent so much time trying different recipes, including the flavours we'd chosen during our tasting session with our original baker. There was a steady supply of cake heading out to friends, family, and our lovely neighbours, who taste-tested everything for me. I spent hours watching tutorials, researching techniques, practising, and making SO much cake before I eventually realised I could have been using dummies to practise all along!
