When I first started Sealy Bakes, I genuinely thought I needed a massive menu, loads of followers, fancy equipment and to somehow know exactly what the hell I was doing.

Spoiler: I needed none of those things 😂

I’m still figuring it out as I go, changing my mind, making mistakes and occasionally wondering what on earth I’ve got myself into.

But I think that’s the biggest thing I’ve learnt you don’t need to have it all figured out before you start.

You just need to start. 🤎

And then work the rest out along the way x

Shedna is cominggggg 🤎

I’m slowly getting everything together to turn this very naked, slightly problematic shed into the Sealy Bakes cake shed 😂

But before I start buying every shelf, sign and pointless little decoration I see… what do YOU want to see in there?! 👀

Starting a baking business sounds pretty dreamy until you realise there’s a LOT nobody warns you about 😂

The admin. The costing. The comparison. The constant changing of plans. The fact that sometimes you’re less “baker” and more accountant, cleaner, photographer and customer service department. 😂

I’m still figuring so much of it out as I go, and I’ve definitely made mistakes along the way — but I think that’s just part of building something from scratch.

And I’m slowly learning that I don’t need to build my business the way someone else has built theirs. I just need to figure out what works for me and for Sealy Bakes 🤎

August has humbled me a little bit 😂

I made mistakes, got overwhelmed, compared myself to other businesses, said yes to too much and generally tried to do about 47 things at once.

But honestly? I’d rather talk about the bits that don’t go perfectly too. I’m figuring this whole small business thing out as I go, and apparently August was the month of learning things the hard way 😂
