I think this may be one of the most personal cakes I’ve ever created… When Cake Became Art to me
What I loved most about this cake, my Fillongley cake, was the way I approached it.
It was one of the first times I truly felt more like an artist than a cake designer because I approached it differently.
When I originally created it for the beautiful Fillongley Hall two years ago, I found myself thinking far beyond the cake itself — considering light, atmosphere, movement and the photographer, Tom's style, just as much as the design.
The brief included layered green tones, whites and flashes of orange, but instinctively I kept the orange away from the cake itself, instead allowing the accompanying florals that Fran had designed for the richer tones and the orange colour inclusion, which looked glorious in the Entrance Hallway with the marble pillars.
This year I revisited the design again, because I had kept the cake and wanted to see it back in the Hall which it was partly designed for.
With yet another fabulous spring open day this year with a lovely team of suppliers but a colour brief of green and white. Perfect opportunity, once again, while redesigning it, I found myself thinking about how it would be captured, how the light would move around it and how the atmosphere would change the feeling of the piece especially as it was going in the orangery which is absolutely beautiful and very light.
While recreating it, I again considered the style of photography of Daniela and knowing this time the cake was sitting on its own, with no floral accompaniment so I addressed wanted to address that, unknowingly found inspiration from the music I was listening too and I just well....didn't think just did! Completely unplanned… I simply followed the feeling and created this design.
The first image here is actually one I took myself at home, then I have added the captured moments of the photographers it was partly created for, i have tagged the photographer into their photos. I love seeing how the same cake is captured and interpreted by each photographer.
Same cake.
Same venue.
Different light, different energy, different story 🤍
