Berkson Bakes

Berkson Bakes Cakes, brownies, tarts, cookies and more, hand made to order for any occasion. All gluten-free. The result?

As a coeliac, Sarah Berkson is on a mission to ensure that she and fellow gluten-freers don't have to miss out on cakes and other baked treats, and that people who can eat gluten don't even notice its absence. Berkson Bakes specialises in all things gluten-free and provides delicious treats for all occasions; other dietary requirements such as vegan or dairy-free also catered for.

Very sadly today's Beau-Events market had to be cancelled as the weather is totally against us (nobody wants flying gazebos or rain-soaked art), but I had already made about three quarters of my planned stock - we were all really hoping the forecast would improve! So I won't be in Jubilee Square today but if you're local to Brighton and fancy some of my wares, you are welcome to come directly to Berkson Bakes HQ and buy things from there (it's just like being back in lockdown when I did home stalls!). 37 Bentham Road, off Queens Park Road and Elm Grove.

As I hadn't finished the baking I don't have as wide a range as usual, but here's today's offering:
• Tayberry cheesecake brownies - £3.50 each
• Salted caramel brownies - £3.50 each
• Vegan chocolate fudge brownies - £3.50 each
• Vegan peanut butter brownies - £3.50 each
• Orange, almond and polenta cake (dairy-free) - £3 a slice
• Bakewell tart - £3.75 a slice

All gluten-free of course (in case you're new here and don't know this), do ask for other allergen info.

It will be handy if you can let me know in advance what you'd like and roughly when you're coming (here or on 07794 269145), but you can also just turn up and take your chances. Cash or card payment, just like at the stall, and you are welcome to bring your own container for cakeaway.

I'm posting early but the shop will be open from 10am. Hope to see you today! 🍫🍰

I'm very firmly Out Of Kitchen for the weekend (currently on a Eurostar train en route for Paris), but here's a return to my usual cake content with most of what I have made lately.

As I discovered yesterday when a friend was trying to arrange a date for a small housewarming gathering, I'm incredibly busy at weekends for the next few months, mostly with market stalls. I'll try and post nearer the time too but here's the next few stall dates for your diaries:

🗓️ Saturday 29th August, makers' market in Jubilee Square

🗓️ Saturday 5th September, LagoonFest at

🗓️ Saturday 26th September, makers' market at Unitarian Church

Hope to see you at one or more of these stalls if you're local! 🍰🍰🍰

There's been a fair bit of baking going on over here, but I have been pretty terrible at sharing any of it! So here's a look back at some of what's come out of Berkson Bakes' kitchen over the last several weeks... 🎂🍰🧁

The last month or so has been EXTREMELY busy with cakery, which is basically why I haven't posted here for so long. This ought to be 2 posts as there are so many cakes to share but keeping it all in one - keep scrolling to see them all! 😄

Alongside the many birthday cakes and other customer orders, I made a few hundred pieces of cakes for stalls the last two weekends (thank you MAKE-a-Market and Paper Daisy for excellent events!), and there'll be a couple of hundred more to be made this week for the annual Cobden Road street party - this Sunday (26th July) from 12-7pm on, surprisingly enough, Cobden Road. Live music, food from Kitgum Kitchen, the Cobden Arms BBQ and me (as always you can bring your own container for cakeaway), tug-of-war, games and general party vibes. Oh, and a fairytales theme - fancy dress highly encouraged! 🧚‍♀️

I try to stay off my phone when I'm busy baking (sometimes successfully...) so I haven't promoted as much as I should have that I am at Paper Daisy Events makers' market RIGHT NOW! In Jubilee Square by the library until 5pm, alongside dozens of other talented creatives - there's all sorts of jewellery, ceramics, paintings and prints, teas, crocheted items, bags, clothing, hot sauces, homewares and so much more. Come and check it all out for yourself!

From me, as always, you are welcome to bring your own container for cakeaway. 🍰

I have LOADS of baking to share with you at some point soon, but for now, just to say it's all go at MAKE-a-Market at the Unitarian Church on New Road - loads of beautiful handmade art and crafty things across two rooms and outside the church. Come check it all out! Here til 4pm, and of course you are welcome to bring your own container for cakeaway from me.

In case you're new here, ✨everything✨ is gluten-free and there's loads suitable for vegans too. AND! I have my special limited-edition tayberry cheesecake brownies and tayberry Bakewell tart - get them while you can as the season is quite short! 🍓

Also massive thanks to Emily at Redroaster for lending me an Aperol parasol (sadly no drinks here, just cake!). I'm somewhat overheating but at least the cakes are in the shade and not melting too much! 🏖️

Lots of lovely birthday cakery lately! (As well as plenty of time relaxing, enjoying the sunshine, and appreciating art, at the Phoenix Gallery, Brighton Museum, and Slade School of Art - none of which I photographed...)

Here we have a vegan and soya-free chocolate orange cake; vegan carrot cake; large coffee and walnut cake; clsssic lemon drizzle with added rainbow sprinkles; and giant "50" cakes - the 5 is just chocolate, and the 0 is lemon and raspberry with mini meringues.

Today I am making an enormous quantity of chocolate items - 7 trays of brownies and 2 lots of cupcakes. Things are going to get pretty melty, myself included! 🥵

It's taken me a while to get round to posting but we are here at Brighton Open Market with plenty of delicious treats - as always everything is gluten-free and there's lots suitable for vegans too. Here til 5pm, and as usual you are welcome to bring your own container for cakeaway. Come hungry! 🍰🍫

It genuinely makes my heart sing to receive lovely reviews from my lovely customers, and indeed get repeat business because that's an equally good sign that they have liked my wares! Here's a few things I've made since my return from holiday, alongside baking lots for last Sunday's stall at the Rotary Family Festival (thankfully not a total washout!), complete with some amazing reviews.

Pictured here: vegan salted caramel brownie with chocolate plaque, dairy-free Victoria sponge and lemon drizzle cake, 10" vanilla sponge with fresh cream and berries, whole Bakewell tart, 8" chocolate and raspberry cake, vegan chocolate and raspberry cupcakes, and a tray of raspberry cheesecake brownie.

Now I'm on to some other birthday orders (for repeat customers again!), as well as baking for this Saturday's stall at Brighton Open Market (10am til 5pm, hope to see you there, and with your own container for cakeaway, don't forget). 🍰

I'm off on holiday tomorrow so a brief hiatus in the cakery (normal service resumes from Monday 1st June), but here's lots of the baking I've been doing recently for all the many May birthdays. Also featured here is the stunning apple and pecan cheesecake my other half made me for my birthday - he absolutely excelled himself this year I would say! 🍏

Looking slightly ahead, I will be at Brighton and Hove Soiree Rotary Club Big Family Festival in Hove Park on Sunday 7th June, then at Brighton Open Market on Saturday 13th June. Hope to see you at one or both of those if you're local! 🎪
