I have made the decision to close my cake business (for now anyway) for various reasons……………………………………………….. 😸Time. I want some time back in my life just to relax! I’ve always run this business alongside an office job which at times has made evenings and weekends non-existent. As my fellow cake makers will know it’s not just the making cakes that’s involved, it’s the admin too, corresponding with customers, accounting, maintaining food hygiene records, ordering and checking stock, etc… 😸Space. I only have a small kitchen and the lack of space can be frustrating and also restricts me from operating on a full time basis. 😸Income security and certainly. I’ve found that knowing exactly when and what I’m going to be paid each month works better for me than a more volatile income that can come with a small business.
😸Prices. I don’t charge enough to pay myself a reasonable wage (in my first year my profit was £8 per order!!) and would have had to put my prices up to correct this and to also keep up with the increase in cost of ingredients. I know that some other cake makers charge up to double what I do to be able to make a living from this business. 😸Enjoyment. I have a passion for cake making but I have found that this has faltered when being in the kitchen past 10pm, on Friday nights, when constantly cleaning the kitchen and washing up, panicking that cakes will topple when I’m delivering them, and when I’m left with no time to take a breather each week. I know that every small business owner puts blood sweat and tears into their trade but at the ripe old age of nearly 42 I want to be able to put my feet up a little more! 👵🏻I’ve chosen a life without kids and I want to be able to enjoy that life. 😸I will still be cake making for friends, family, and fun so you will continue to see the odd cake pop up on here 😊 😻Thank you to all my amazing and loyal customers who have supported me and my little business over the last two and a bit years. It’s you lot and your lovely feedback that kept me going 💗
