Originally released in 2017, Zara McFarlaneâs Arise returns to vinyl as part of Brownswoodâs 20th anniversary celebrations, this time on limited gold vinyl (500 copies worldwide). Contributors now reads like a whoâs who of the UK jazz scene, with Shabaka Hutchings, Binker Golding, Nathaniel Cross and Shirley Tetteh all involved. Produced and co-written by Moses Boyd, it draws deeply on McFarlaneâs Jamaican heritage, bringing jazz together with reggae, soul and Afro-Caribbean rhythms.
Something special from the Mr Bongo archives: Trinidadian steelpan master Len âBoogsieâ Sharpeâs Phase 2 gets its first complete reissue since its original 1979 release. Dubbed the âMozart of Panâ by Wynton Marsalis, Boogsie takes steelpan well beyond traditional calypso here, pushing into jazz-funk, disco and cosmic territory. The killer is his pan-heavy version of Roy Ayersâ Canât You See Me.
Originally released in 1981, Orchestra Baobabâs Mouhamadoe Bamba is a Senegalese classic and one of the groupâs defining records. Recorded at Dakarâs Golden Baobab studio and produced by Ibrahima Sylla, it brings together Senegalese rhythms, Afro-Cuban son, bolero and jazz, with Barthelemy Attissoâs hypnotic guitar and Issa Sissokhoâs understated saxophone at the heart of the sound.
Melbourne instrumental funk quartet Karate Boogaloo strip things right back on new album Access All Areas. The four childhood friends have spent nearly 20 years developing their own take on deep funk and soul, taking inspiration from The Meters, Booker T. & the M.G.âs and The J.B.âs.
We know we know, itâ a bit early to be breaking out the C-word but as Christmas albums go this is THE ONE to have if you need one for your turntable. And you might as well get it early to max out usage.
