*Update*
I’ve not really been baking much this year.
I’ve made the odd cake for friends and family, but if I’m honest, after so many years of teaching taking up pretty much all of my time, energy and headspace, I’ve taken the opportunity to actually enjoy having some time for me and my family.
And I’ve loved it.
Kelly Boag Occasion Cakes started as my way of switching my head off from the constant that was teaching.
There is something about concentrating on a cake that means you genuinely can’t think about anything else. You’re thinking about the shape, the colours, the decorations, what needs doing next… and for those few hours, everything else disappears.
It’s probably the best “switch off” I’ve ever had.
Now that I’ve changed careers, it’s changed a bit. I don’t need it to be an escape anymore. I can just enjoy it.
I will keep up with what’s new, have a play with different decorating techniques, practise things I haven’t done for a while and occasionally, make a ridiculous amount of cake just because I fancied trying something 😂.
Because there is a long term plan…
One day, when I eventually retire, I want a little tea room and cake shop. Somewhere I can bake, make cakes, drink tea and probably eat far too much of my own cake. (Which I very rarely get a chance to do).
So for now, Kelly Boag Occasion Cakes will continue as my little side project, my excuse to keep practising and my future retirement plan in cake form.
And I’m quite happy with that.
