It took me seven months to train as a Celebrant with the Academy of Modern Celebrancy, and during that time I learnt so much more than simply how to write a ceremony.

I learnt how to structure a service, how to research, how to be creative and, most importantly, how to recognise whether I am the right celebrant for the person or family placing their trust in me.

Whether it’s a wedding, funeral or naming ceremony, that connection matters. Yes, this is my business, but it should never be just business. Getting it right for someone on one of the most important days of their life will always come first.

These days, with the multitude of AI tools, almost anyone can produce the words for a ceremony, but when you’ve been trained you can tell. However, a truly personal ceremony is about far more than words on a page. It’s about listening, understanding, asking the right questions, reading the room and bringing someone’s story to life in a way that feels completely theirs. Believe me, you can tell the difference.

Reviews like this are my reward. They tell me that I understood the person, understood the family and, most importantly, I was the right celebrant for them, and that no only comes from the training or experience, it comes from within.

When it comes to choosing someone to tell your story, or the story of someone you love, don’t settle for anything less than the right fit.

Yesterday I had the privilege of conducting my first funeral service at Sewardstone Park Cemetery and Crematorium, and I came away incredibly impressed by both the surroundings and the people who work there.

It was a particularly delicate service due to the circumstances of the person’s passing, which made the environment in which we gathered feel even more important.

From the moment you arrive, the setting is quite remarkable. Surrounded by around 200 acres of forest and greenery, there is an immediate sense of space, peace and tranquillity.

The venue itself is spacious and modern, yet importantly, it doesn’t feel clinical or even particularly like a crematorium. During the service, the beautiful views beyond the ceremony room provided a gentle and natural backdrop. For those who were understandably struggling at times, simply being able to look out across the landscape offered a welcome moment of distraction and reflection.

As a Celebrant, the people you work alongside can make such a difference too, and I would like to thank the team at Sewardstone Park. From the moment I arrived, they were welcoming, friendly and incredibly cooperative, helping everything run with the care and dignity that such an important day deserved.

A beautiful setting, a very different environment in which to say goodbye, and somewhere I hope to have the opportunity to conduct services again in the future.

The greatest compliment I can receive is knowing that a family felt their loved one’s story was told with the care, warmth and dignity it deserved.
Thank you for your kind words and for trusting me to guide you through such an important day. ❤️

Planning a funeral can feel overwhelming.
Families are grieving while navigating legalities, difficult decisions and the pressure of wanting to “get it right.”
In this first episode, Independent Celebrant Vince Hawkes shares what really happens when a Celebrant walks into a family home for the first time — the fears families often carry, the conversations that bring comfort, and the unseen work involved in creating a meaningful ceremony.
From choosing music and preparing orders of service to writing personal tributes and finding moments of laughter in sadness, this episode explores how storytelling helps families say goodbye.
