There are many women being amazing day in, day out living unassuming lives among us but doing incredible things within their communities.
So for International Women’s Day we’d like to pay tribute to all those women by sharing the story of Ruth Tetlow - teacher, activist and campaigner. We had the absolute privilege of looking after her and arranging her funeral last month.
Throughout her life Ruth quietly but persistently demonstrated and led projects around social justice and interfaith tolerance demonstrating her deep conviction for female participation and care for the planet whilst doing so.
You can find more details about her via a link below, but her award in 2022 from the Archbishop of Canterbury for her “outstanding contribution to interfaith relations in Birmingham over four decades” should give you some idea of what she achieved.
It should be no surprise therefore that there was standing room only at her funeral on Friday 13th February at All Saints Church in Kings Heath. The stream of people of all faiths coming up to speak and pay tribute to Ruth’s leadership, collaboration and friendship was a true testament to her commitment to making the world a more united and better place.
The ceremony ended with four people standing together around her coffin offering a prayer each: a Vicar, a Rabbi, an Imam and a Sikh. It was the most incredible affirmation and statement of her life’s work and a real tribute to the legacy she leaves behind. It was also no mean feat considering what’s happening in the world around us right now and can only serve to give us hope for a brighter future.
So to Ruth, and all the women striving to make the world a better place we say thank you - and urge you to keep on doing what you’re doing. It does make a difference.
