British Bakels British Bakels Ltd develops and manufactures high quality ingredients to the commercial baking market

British Bakels manufacture and distribute a wide range of ingredients, some of which are tailor made for industrial and instore bakeries while others are specifically developed for the Craft and Foodservice sectors. Products are formulated to suit each market sector and British Bakels has well established sales and technical teams focusing on serving the particular needs of each sector. The Indust

rial Group is even more specialised with separate bread, confectionery and instore bakery teams in place. Customer Service teams are also set up to provide expert support to their respective customers. Serving specific market sector requirements does not stop at product development and technical support. Packaging (from small packs to road tankers) and equipment to support product application are also tailored to ensure that whatever size our customers are, whatever products they are producing, British Bakels can supply appropriate products and support.

William joined Bakels in 2017 straight from University College Birmingham as Baking Centre Manager. Instead of progressing into Technical Support, he chose to move into the commercial team, combining his baking knowledge with a customer-focused role. Since then, William has worked his way to National Commercial Manager.

โ€œI enjoy working closely with our customers. Being part baker and part sales really helps, you understand what matters to them and how products perform in practice.โ€

Alongside his role, William is passionate about supporting the next generation of bakers. He works closely with bakery industry bodies and regularly visits universities to speak to students about careers in the industry.

โ€œI believe it's important to develop future professionals, at the college level to give them every chance of success in their later lives. I was fortunate to have Keith Houliston and Andy Hooper do the same for me when I was in universityโ€

Williamโ€™s contribution to the industry has recently been recognised by the Worshipful Company of Bakers, where he received the Journeyman Award. This award recognises both his own progression and his commitment to supporting new bakers entering the industry.

โ€œWhatโ€™s surprised me most has been how many different roles exist within British Bakels. Iโ€™ve spent time in the bakery, technical and NPD departments and there are so many aspects I didnโ€™t know about. Roles such as Technical Support Manager and Existing Product Development were never on my radar.โ€

โ€œThis is something Iโ€™ve been able to share while supporting the Bakels student outreach programmes. Iโ€™ve spoken at several colleges and even judged at the ABST Awards.โ€

You will have seen Joโ€™s work across the Bakels and Renshaw social channels, where her sugarcraft skills have helped bring the Renshaw Monsters to life.

โ€œOne of the highlights of my time at Bakels has been working on the Renshaw Monster mascots. Itโ€™s a joy to work with Renshaw fondant icings, and I love bringing personality to each one.

Joโ€™s hard work has not gone unnoticed, as last year she received the ABIM Young Baker of the Year Award at the National Bakery Awards.
