Update on our journey forward – Erika & the Buns & Crumbs Team

Hi everyone, Erika here. I wanted to check in, give you a quick update on our situation, and address a few things that have been happening behind the scenes over the last couple of days.

As you know from my last post, we are working hard behind the scenes to navigate an unexpected change that means we have to move our production and baking side of the business off-site. When I shared that post, I intentionally kept the details vague.

There are real people involved in this situation with their own reasons, and protecting everyone's privacy and the livelihoods of my local staff will always be my absolute priority.Unfortunately, since that post went up, we received a visit from the Environmental Health Officer (EHO).

This was triggered by an anonymous complaint from a female individual making completely fabricated claims about us lacking planning and council consents. Basically, this person jumped to wild assumptions, ran with them, and used them to try and kick us while we are down. Importantly, this is not the first time this same individual has targeted us with completely baseless complaints.

It is incredibly heartbreaking that while we are fighting to adapt and keep our doors open, someone has chosen to repeatedly target us with entirely made-up, malicious gossip.Because of this, I want to be crystal clear and reassure every single one of our wonderful customers: we have fully passed all Council Planning and Environmental Health regulations. We are 100% compliant.

We would actually like to deeply thank the EHO and South Ayrshire Council (SAC) for their incredible support and understanding during their visit. The authorities are fully aware of our business setup, they know our doors are open entirely legally, and they recognise that these ongoing accusations are completely false and malicious. We have done absolutely nothing wrong.While there are unfortunately some seriously bitter people around, we refuse to focus on them. Instead, we want to look at the beautiful side of this situation: you.

The response to our cry for help has been nothing short of overwhelming. We have received countless messages of warmth, brilliant ideas, and some of you have even incredibly offered your own kitchens for us to bake in! That exact community spirit is why we love being here, and it is exactly what Buns & Crumbs is all about.

What happens next:
While we continue our urgent search for a secondary commercial kitchen or production space nearby before the Christmas deadline, we are continuing to operate fully from our Monkton premises. You can still come in for your favourite fresh sandwiches, hot food, and retail goodies just like normal.

Thank you all from the bottom of our hearts for standing by us, your trust, and your ongoing love. We are standing strong, and with a community like this behind us, we know we’ll find a way through.See you at the counter!

Hi everyone, Erika here. I’m reaching out today because we’ve hit a massive, unexpected hurdle and we really need your help, advice, and support to get through it.
Due to some sudden changes with our building use restrictions, we are facing an incredibly tough reality. Making our sandwiches and selling them on-site is completely fine, but the actual baking on the premises is the problem. Because of this, the choices we've been given are black and white: we either find a secondary space to bake our fresh food elsewhere, or we have to shut down completely.
I don't want to get bogged down in the technical details or red tape, but I want to assure everyone that we’ve done absolutely nothing wrong and this is totally out of our hands. Shutting down is definitely not our choice. My only focus right now is finding a positive way forward that keeps us here serving you, because we love being part of Monkton and we aren't ready to say goodbye.
When we moved here, our goal was to build more than just a bakery—we wanted to create a real asset for the village. I’m so proud of how this shop has become a bustling little hub where neighbours catch up, grab their hot food, and bring a bit of extra life and energy to the street. We have so many bigger plans for the community too, from local events to exciting new ways to bring people together, and it breaks my heart to think that could all be cut short.
We refuse to walk away without a fight, but the situation is incredibly tough:
• Our plan to stay: To keep our Monkton shop open for hot food, sandwiches, and retail, we desperately need to find a new, secondary space nearby where we can do our production and baking.
• The financial strain: Moving our business from Beith into Monkton and completely refitting the shop already cost us thousands of pounds. It took an enormous amount of physical hard work and completely wiped out our reserves, leaving things incredibly tight right now.
• The tight timeline: We need to find, secure, and set up this new baking space before Christmas.
• What’s entirely on the line: This isn't just a business to me—it's my whole life and my absolute passion. If we are forced to shut down, the jobs and livelihoods of my dedicated colleagues are completely gone. These are local people who rely on this shop to support their families, pay their bills, and keep a roof over their heads. We have poured every single ounce of our energy, endless sleepless nights, and our hard-earned savings into building this space for you. If we can't find a solution quickly, the future of my colleagues and everything we have sacrificed to get here is in serious jeopardy.

Do you know of any available commercial spaces, units, or kitchens nearby that we could bake from? Do you have experience in commercial property or any connections that could help us move fast? Even just sharing this post to help us reach the right person would mean the absolute world to us.
We aren't ready to let go, and with your help, we know we can find a way to keep the ovens turning.

Hello everyone!
As the colder months approach we’ve decided to switch things up for the Winter time.
We will now be closed on a Monday, starting on the 28th of September. This will allow our team to have two days off to recharge and come back on a Tuesday with new ideas and inspiration!
On another good note we will open earlier and close later on a Saturday so you’ll have more time to pop in to see us for your weekend treats!

We hope to see you all soon, and just a wee reminder our monthly pizza night is on this Saturday and we advise to book in your slot to avoid disappointment as spaces are filling up fast✨
