22 years together
10 years married
4 years parenting

I won’t lie, I’ve not been in a great headspace recently. There’s been an awful lot going on and in all honesty I have been really trying to make positive change. I think at times in doing said change, you have to get a bit worse to get a lot better and that’s where I am now.

I found a draft of a post about being married for ten years and wanted to finish it. This human is so kind, so passionate and fills me with pride eon a daily basis. She puts up with me and improves me in so many ways, even if I don’t show it sometimes I really do appreciate everything she does. She’s also incredible with Del. We are both extremely lucky to have her in our lives. Home is where your heart is and my DNA might not be with Del, but home is wherever these two are.

So I’m working on myself. I’ll come out the other end, but I’m working to come out the other end a lot stronger thanks to these two.

Foundation Coffee Roasters -

📍- St Ives, Cornwall

I always had a dream with Quaff to be responsible for introducing the roasters I adored to people in Norfolk and Suffolk. Strangely, a roaster I’d never heard of were my first guest. I remember getting samples through and being blown away by how clean the coffee tasted and placing an order straight away. Coffee taste is important. But what I actually got was the best allies in the industry that I’m lucky enough to consider friends.

Community in the professional side of coffee is really important, as important as the community the cafe creates with its customers. Considering it’s a profession where we work with people all day, it can be quite lonely and it’s amazing having people like Foundation that even though it’s the other side of the country, make you feel like you’re part of a community.

By the way, the coffee, if anything, has gotten better. The Ethiopian I’m drinking has a beautiful orange sweetness, a slight floral note and is full of brightness. I’m pacing my caffeine intake but I cannot wait to try this as an espresso.

I’ll be hard pushed to find a time when I don’t have a bag of Foundation on my shelves.

For filter or a funky espresso, the Daniso Horsa Ethiopian is the one.
For a great, solid espresso, Pard. Always Pard.

Thanks Foundation. Now for that espresso…

SANCTUARY

📍- Cockington Village, Torquay

Sanctuary were one of my favourite roasters in my time with Quaff. Everything from their coffee to their branding and their message was incredible. There was a version of their coffee “fifty three” that was up there with my favourite coffees I had at quaff.

Ever since, Marcus and I have stayed in touch and I’ve recommended his coffee to several cafes across the East. Marcus and Rhian have now in true Escape to the Country fashion, moved from London to a beautiful village in Devon and set up shop. Still roasting exceptional coffee, Nectarine Dream is currently my espresso of the year, their shop offers a variety of espresso and filter in the most glorious of settings.

Great people in a great space, serving great coffee in a great location. What more do you need?! If you ever find yourself that way, go pay them a visit. It’s a coffee experience you won’t forget with the nicest people.

Oh and a percentage sales from their coffee go to Animal Sanctuaries. Coffee that tastes good and does good.

Go buy Nectarine Dream. I believe it’s on their website. Smashing filter, great flat white, best espresso of the year so far.

BEACON COFFEE

📍- Falmouth, Cornwall

Sam and Alex and Beacon as a place truly inspired me in creating Quaff. High quality coffee in an accessible way, in a community that is inviting to all is what makes this place. I get asked a lot about my inspiration and this is one of the main ones.

Coffees rotate here, with some regulars on the shelves and some new roasters but what they all have in common is both quality and ethics. My last visit before today I had the best milk drink I’ve ever had, an Ethiopian from . This time, they have introduced a frozen menu, great for my tastebuds, bad for my bank balance. Today I had a flat white that was like strawberry milk, a bukonzo dream Ugandan Natural from , followed by two filters from the frozen menu, the Gasharu Rwandan Anaerobic natural, tasting delicate, grape like, orangey and beautiful, and the Edison Argote Quebraditas SL28 Colombian natural that does definitely taste like Strawberry Quality Street. Both coffees from who, if Quaff still existed I wouldn’t hesitate in ordering from.

Beacon is a staple, and usually the first mentioned in my top five coffee shops. I think they’re responsible for a few of my top ten coffees I have had too. If you want to open a coffee shop, go here, watch, taste and set this as a standard.

always amazing. Thank you.

This came up on my memories the other day and thought it was due a reposting.

I miss the shop at the moment. I miss serving stupid coffees to people, be it dictated by process and roasting or by the things I put in it.

I’m scheming this year. Got some fun potential projects in the works.

As always, I’m still available to help in a variety of ways. Want to open a coffee shop or van or cart or whatever, I can help. Looking for coffee supply or to run a guest coffee program, I have a load of wonderful roasters to choose from. Want some training for your staff/self on anything coffee then let me know.

Need coffee for an event, I can sort out anything from an espresso machine and grinder on a table through to a full coffee van experience for any style of event.

Also, machinery needs or anything else then let me know. I’m always keen to help.

PUMP STREET BAKERY

Orford is possibly the most beautiful place in East Anglia, especially on a day like today. Blue skies and sun. Orford is also home of the always wonderful Pump Street Bakery and Chocolate Shop. The food and drink were exceptional. I had a bear claw which was so delicate but flavourful. We also bought a loaf and some bagels for home.

I am really envious of their coffee bar set up. Super clean, simple but efficient, I can see how it would be a pleasure to work with.

I’m really excited about the coffee workshops I’m doing down the road at their workshop too.

If you’re in the area it’s so worth a visit.

Bit early to talk about 2025 but I think it might be a big year. I want to make some really positive changes both in life and career. I’ve made coffee now for six years (is that all?) and I’ll be turning 38. I want to be able to take my career back to what I thought it might be at the start. I’m doing some training on Tuesday and I am excited about it and I realised that was the goal from the start. I want to do courses and make people passionate about coffee.

I also think I want to learn to roast. So instead of just sitting around d wishing I’m going to actively try and find ways to make it happen. Whether it’s a career path or just because it’s something I want to know more about. So instead of auto piloting I’m going to see what happens when I try and make things happen. Obviously I’m not going to wait til 2025. This will start now.

Don’t get me wrong, you’ll always find me somewhere pouring stupid shapes in liquids.

I never feel like I’m going home. Just going back where I live as really my heart will be in Cornwall. A place where someone whose brain never switches off, feels calm. A sense of belonging I don’t feel most of the time. I love it here. The phrase “you can always stay” is repeating a lot and more than ever before I feel like I’m being taken away from somewhere I can be me.

Such a needed and lovely break, albeit with unavoidable set backs. I do feel revived and ready to take on the next chapter, whatever that may bring. One day left here. I’ve got more pastries to eat and coffee to drink.

One whole year has passed since we drew a close to the second proudest thing I've ever done (after Del).

It seems like a lifetime ago. So much and yet so little has changed. Do I miss it? Day to day, god yes. I miss the people the most and I miss playing with such a vast array of coffee. However I'm still actually feeling the repercussions of opening a shop. It was hard. We opened in a global pandemic, with price rises galore and, in all honesty, I'm totally not a businessman.
woo still makes awesome art and although I don't see her every week, it's lovely just being friends rather than coworkers. In case you hadn't before, .creative go check her work out, she will be busier this summer, keep your eyes peeled.
nickerson_smith has fallen head first into her new roles with and and is balancing that with being an incredible mum to Del. I'm very proud.

Del is now 3 and a half. I'm working an awful lot at the moment and feel that I'm not being the dad I really want to be towards her, but needs must and all that. She's an amazing, hilarious ball of energy who I adore greatly. Not a day passes where I don't laugh both with and at her. I'm lucky to have her.

As for me, I'm making coffee and working with people who I love working with. Right now, being honest, I'm hugely overwhelmed with work but feel as though I'm not too far away from being where I want to be.

So thank you, a year on. The Quaff Years™ did more.for my mental health than any other time of my life. Anyone fancy a bagel?

.uk at it again. This Brazil from .fazenda is marvellous. Boozy but like drinking melted chocolate, Sanctuary never cease to amaze me at how consistently great their coffee is. Great people and great coffee makes great things. I'm running low on this coffee which makes me sad but if you're a coffee drinker at home please go get some coffee from them. If you own a shop, treat your guests. You won't regret it.

WE WISH YOU A MERRY QUAFFMAS WE WISH YOU A MERRY QUAFFMAS....

THIS SATURDAY I am rocking up to with some delicious coffee. Will be making filters and god knows what else for the day and have some retail to sell. If you've missed me, and if you need some coffee for Christmas or as a gift then I've got the perfect choices for you.

I would love to see some familiar faces so please come down.

Thanks

ANNOUNCEMENT

Hello

So to formally announce the worst kept secret. Quaff East is closing its doors on 21st May. Never fear, there will be coffee served in the building after a small break, but sadly it won't be with us behind the bar.

We wanted to say thank you to anyone who has walked through the door. 975 days since the first day, serving at the door through a pandemic, we've never really known the shop I imagined before we opened. However we have made friends because of this place. From the customers that come in through to the producers we have grown to love, we hope to stay in touch and can't thank you all enough.

Thank you. All of you. Quaff has always been a place of great coffee and great community and without you, that wouldn't be the case. There will be personal thank yous to come in the next fortnight, but for now, know that we couldn't have done any of this without you.

We are having a final weekend on 20th and 21st May. Coffee, ice cream sandwiches and bagels a plenty. We would love to see as many faces as possible. I'll post more detail later.

But yeah, thank you. Feeling quite emotional.

David, Eleanor, Helen and Del
