They say that all good things must come to an end, and sadly the last customer cake has now left our kitchen. Although I've had an absolute blast designing and creating cakes over the years, eye problems and a recurring issue with my shoulder have made it increasingly difficult and painful over the last 12 months, to the point that the decision to stop has been inevitable.
Thank you so much to all my lovely customers who have entrusted me with making cakes for their special occasions. I've had the honour of being a small part of all sorts of family celebrations and had the pleasure of seeing the recipient's face light up when they've taken the lid off the cake box - a priceless moment, I can tell you. I know that many of the little models I've made over the years are still treasured by the people they were made for. I've made lots and lots of sugar flowers, people, dogs, cats, cars and motorbikes as well as a few more unusual animals/characters/items.
Thanks too to my wonderfully supportive husband, Mike. There have been countless Friday evenings when he has barely seen me, apart from through the kitchen door! He's made me endless cups of coffee to keep me awake when I've been working late into the night, hugged me when I needed reassuring and helped with deliveries (even taking a day's leave for one large wedding cake). I could not have done it without him.
I've made some wonderful local cake friends who have shown so much kindness in times of crisis, taking on a couple of orders for me when I've been in severe pain and when my Dad passed away. Thank you guys.
One of my proudest moments was entering the Small Exhibit category of Cake International in Birmingham in 2018 and being awarded a Merit for my "Clangers" piece.
I'm looking forward to being able to spend full weekends with my hubby, more time with my family and enjoying the heat of the summer without worrying about sticky sugarpaste! I'll miss the creative part, but will continue to bake for friends and family from time to time.
My apron is now hung up.
